Friday Estimates: Black Panther on Pace for $100-Million Weekend

February 24, 2018

Black Panther

As expected, Black Panther dominated on Friday at the box office. However, it was a little better than we were predicting, earning $28.86 million. Usually when outstanding reviews have to go up against the Fanboy effect, the Fanboy effect wins, but not this time. Look for $101 million during its second weekend of release, making it just the fourth film to earn $100 million during its second weekend. On a related note, the film has already topped the lifetime totals of several MCU installments, including Thor: Ragnarok.

Game Night pulled in $5.6 million on Friday, which is a little lower than expected. Its reviews are a real asset, but it only managed a B plus from CinemaScore, which is middling. It should still earn close to $15 million over the weekend, which isn’t a bad start for a comedy.

Annihilation’s results were mixed. On the one hand, it earned third place on Friday with $2.86 million and its reviews remain some of the best we’ve seen so far this year. On the other hand, its CinemaScore was a mere C, which suggests short legs, while Peter Rabbit will overtake it for third place over the full weekend. That said, it is on pace for just over $10 million, which is better than our initial prediction.

Every Day bombed with just $1.08 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $3 million over the weekend. Its reviews are mixed, but it did earn a B plus from CinemaScore, so its word-of-mouth should be slightly better. On the other hand, it will open below the Mendoza Line, so theater owners will drop it as soon as they are able to.

There’s one last new release of note, Operation Red Sea, which opened with $130,000 in just 45 theaters, giving it a theater average that is better than any of the wide releases this week. There are not many reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but the ones that are there are positive.
