The Shape of Water

It’s Oscar week on the home market with several Oscar nominees and winners. Many of these films, like Call Me by Your Name and I, Tonya, are contenders for Pick of the Week. The actual winner of this title is The Shape of Water on Blu-ray Combo Pack or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack. It’s not the biggest release on this week’s list, as that honor goes to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but that’s only coming out on Video on Demand.

Birdboy: The Forgotten Children - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
An animated film about an island that suffered an environmental catastrophe. The film’s reviews are amazing, but like most animated films, it went no where at the box office. The extras are light with just an interview with the filmmakers, the original short it is based on, and another short film by the same director. That said, it is still a Pick of the Week contender.

Call Me by Your Name - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
An Oscar winning movie about a 17-year old boy who falls in love with a 24-year old man. The reviews and the Awards Season success means it is worth picking up. The extras include an audio commentary track, some featurettes, and more. This makes it a Pick of the Week contender.

The Disaster Artist - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
One of two films on this week’s list that were based on real life events that were also Oscar contenders. I prefer I, Tonya. Like that film, The Disaster Artist softened its lead character, but here Tommy Wiseau goes from an abusive individual to a plucky underdog. Extras include an audio commentary track, a trio of featurettes, and outtakes. It is worth picking up, but not a Pick of the Week contender.

Downfall - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
You’ve seen the memes, now watch the original movie. Seriously, if you’ve only seen this movie in meme form, then you should really watch the original movie. It is fantastic.

Fear The Walking Dead: Season 3 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This show has lost nearly 70% of its audience from season one to season three. Ouch. If you are one of the people left watching, you will want to pick up this DVD / Blu-ray and enjoy it while it lasts.

Ferdinand - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
It earned an Oscar nomination, but it is merely good and not good enough for adult fans of animation. If you have kids of the right age, then it is worth picking up.

The Good Fight: Season One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The spin-off to The Good Wife and amazingly, this TV show is earning even better reviews. The only extras are some deleted scenes and some outtakes, but it is still worth picking up for fans of the show.

The Handmaid's Tale: Season 1 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the best TV shows that started last season. It picked up 13 Emmy nominations, winning 8 of them. It is an incredible show and a must see. On the other hand, there’s not a lot of extras, just a making of featurette and a featurette on its cultural impact.

I, Tonya - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
One of several Oscar nominated films to come out on the home market this week. It’s not the best, but is it still worth picking up? Read our review to find out.

Justice League - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A friend of mine... a “friend” of mine is threatening to make us to watch this movie next weekend. If he goes through with this threat, I might do a spotlight review next weekend. In the meantime, it’s closer to Man of Steel than BvS and there are a ton of extras on the DVD / Blu-ray. Also, it is getting a 3D release, so if you’ve been wanting more of those, then you could do worse.

Kickboxer: Retaliation - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film is earning 91% positive reviews. ... Clearly this is a computer simulation and we are experiencing a glitch in the programming. Even the one negative review sounds like a positive review to me. “This film feels like watching a series of fight sequences that are loosely connected by a wafer thin plot.” Yeah, that’s what you want in a movie like this. The only extra is a single featurette, but that’s still enough to be worth picking up, if you are a fan of the genre in general, or of the franchise in particular.

Lego DC Super Heroes: The Flash - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
If you are a fan of DC Comics, but are not interested in Justice League, then at least you have another option.

Major Crimes: The Sixth and Final Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
The number of police procedurals have been slowly coming down from their unsustainable peak not too long ago. Also coming out this week is the Complete Collection.

The Shape of Water - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
One of the best-reviewed movies of 2017 and arguably the biggest winner on Oscar night. (You could also argue that there were so many multi-Oscar winners that there was no one big winner on Oscar night.) It is easily worth picking up and, even without extras, it would be a contender for Pick of the Week. Granted, there is no audio commentary track, but there are five featurettes. It’s the Pick of the Week.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Truth be Told - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
It’s a Hallmark Channel original movie with no reviews. It is part of a long-running franchise, so if you liked the previous movies, you will probably like this one as well.

Suspiria: Special Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Arguably Dario Argento’s best movie, and that’s saying a lot. Extras include an audio commentary track, retrospective, interviews, and more. It is a Pick of the Week contender.

A Trip to the Moon - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Georges Méliès’ most famous film and one of the most important films in movie history. This edition includes a remastered hand colored edition, the black and white edition, as well as a feature-length documentary about the film. It is a must have for fans of movie history and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Wedding March 2: Resorting to Love - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
The second Hallmark Channel original movie on this week’s list. Like the previous one, this one has no reviews, but its target audience knows if they will enjoy it or not.

When The Starlight Ends - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This film is one of the best-selling releases on this week’s list, but there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, I couldn’t even find a page.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Justice League - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 3D Combo Pack
What the...? There’s a 3D movie coming out this week. It’s not a good movie, but it’s still better than most weeks.

4K Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Ferdinand - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Illumination Presents: 3-Movie Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack

The Shape of Water - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
The best movie of the week is also coming out on 4K. If you have a 4K setup, then you are in luck. If not, I’d wait till you have a reason to buy a new TV. At this point, almost all large screen TVs (anything significantly more than 50”) are 4K.
