Home Market Releases for March 27th, 2018

March 27, 2018

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

It’s a short week for one reason: Star Wars: The Last Jedi is coming out on DVD / Blu-ray / 4K Ultra HD and no one really wants to deal with that competition. That’s not to say there are no other releases worth picking up. Last Men in Aleppo is an Oscar nominated documentary and worth picking up. In the end, The Last Jedi was the clear Pick of the Week winner.

The Americans: Season 5 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
The spy thriller begins its final season on the 28th, but the DVD for season five comes out on the 27th. That doesn’t leave enough time to get caught up. Hell, it doesn’t leave enough time to get the DVD shipped to you. Fortunately for fans, the creators of the show knew season six would be the last before season five was renewed, so they very likely have a plan to end the show on a high note.

Brokenwood Mysteries: Series 4 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
A police procedural show from New Zealand. Like most imports of a similar nature this one is better regarded as four TV movies rather than a full TV on DVD set.

Batman and Mr. Freeze: Subzero - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
D.C. Comics movies are struggling in theaters, but their animated videos usually earn great reviews. This one is no exception. Extras include two featurettes and four episodes from various shows that feature Mr. Freeze.

King of Jazz: The Criterion Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A 1930s all-star musical that was extravagant, but failed to find an audience in theaters. The DVD / Blu-ray is loaded with extras, including new audio commentary track, interviews, etc.

Last Men in Aleppo - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
An Oscar nominated documentary that earned 100% positive reviews. Sadly, it is only getting a DVD release, one that is barely selling well enough to get a mention here. The DVD does have a short-form documentary on the same city, so it is worth picking up.

The Last Movie Star - Buy from Amazon: DVD and Blu-ray
This film is a love letter to Burt Reynolds and his career. Does it work as a movie? Or is it only for fans of the actor? Read my review for my opinion.

Legion: Season 1 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Marvel’s dominance of the box office is unprecedented and it has only had a couple of missteps on TV. Legion has earned incredible reviews, but its ratings are not great. It did get a second season, but it also lost 50% of its viewership from the series premiere to the season one finale and the buzz I heard about the show has faded with it. Extras include lots of featurettes and deleted scenes, so it is worth picking up.

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood: It's a Beautiful Day - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
30 episodes of the classic kids show on a 4-disc set. On a related note, Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is coming out this summer. I’ve heard from a number of people that if you grew up on this show, this documentary will turn you into a crying baby.

The Moody Blues: Days of Future Passed Live - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Normally we don’t include concert DVD / Blu-rays here, because they almost never sell well enough to warrant inclusion. This is easily one of the ten best selling new releases of the week. It’s a great band and the album they are celebrating is an absolute classic, but I’m still pleasantly surprised at its sales numbers.

Mr. Robot: Season 3 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is an amazing show that has earned a ton of nominations and awards. It has also lost more than half of its average audience since season one. Extras include a trio of featurettes, deleted scenes, and outtakes. Definitely worth picking up.

The Outer Limits: Season One - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The classic Sci-fi anthology show from the 1960s is making its Blu-ray debut. The cost is high compared to Blu-ray releases for contemporary TV shows, but this is not uncommon for shows that are 50 years old. If you like Sci-fi, then this is a must have. Extras include a 40-page pamphlet and audio commentary tracks on multiple episodes.

Power Rangers: RPM: The Complete Series - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I previously reviewed this show and this is easily the best installment in the Power Rangers franchise. It is so good that I pre-ordered the DVD when I first saw its release date.

The Robot Chicken Walking Dead Special: Look Who's Walking - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
It has been years since I watched Robot Chicken regularly and I was never a big fan of The Walking Dead. Is this special going to be a total dud as a result? Or will it still make me laugh? Check out our review to find out.

The Sandlot - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
I put in a request for a screener, but it has not yet arrived. This is one of those movies that wasn’t a hit with critics or with moviegoers when it first came out, but has since become a classic, but at this point, nostalgia for the movie is bigger than the nostalgia the movie has for the time it depicts.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only or Video on Demand (With Bonus Features)
This is the biggest hit of 2017. Is it also one of the best? Read our review for my opinion.

Women in Love: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
It’s a good week for Anime fans with both Gintama and Robot Carnival being worth picking up. The former is one of the best Anime series, at least according to the voters on My Anime List. The latter is an anthology movie from 1987 that is making its Blu-ray debut this week.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
There’s only one 4K release this week, but it is the biggest release of the week and the biggest film of 2017.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Power Rangers: RPM: The Complete Series - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The best Power Rangers series, at least in my opinion.
