Home Market Releases for April 17th, 2018

April 17, 2018

MST3K

It’s a slow week on the home market, which is common for this time of year. The biggest release of the week, The Post, is also one of the best and one of only three contenders for Pick of the Week. In the end, I went with MST3K: Season 11 and awarded it the honor.

The Awful Truth: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The latest Criterion Collection release is an Irene Dunne / Cary Grant film from 1937. The two star as a married couple going through a divorce, who realise that maybe they are the best partners for each other. Extras include two new featurettes and an archival interview with Irene Dunne. It is easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Black Eagle - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This screener arrived really late, then got pushed back as other screeners arrived barely in time for me to review. Was it worth the wait? Or is this movie only for hardcore Jean-Claude Van Damme fans. Read our review for my opinion.

The Commuter - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A typical Liam Neeson action film. If you really like this narrow genre, then you should check out the movie. However, if you are like me and have grown bored of these films, it is safely skippable. It’s not bad, it’s just average. Extras are limited to just two featurettes, so even if you like these films a rental will likely be enough.

Deep Blue Sea 2 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
The original came out nearly 20 years ago. Why is it getting a sequel now? Speaking of the original, you can buy both films as a Two-pack, but only on DVD.

Genius: Einstein - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
National Geographic’s first non-documentary film. It is a biopic of Albert Einstein starring Geoffrey Rush. The reviews for the mini-series are excellent and it is worth checking out. It is only coming out on DVD, but there are plenty of extras, so that helps lift it to a solid purchase.

Interview With Monster Girls: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This Anime is set in a world where there are half-human, half-monsters called Ajin. This show focuses on a teacher who has three such students in his class, as well as another as a co-worker. He decides to interview these monster girls to learn more about them. The reviews on My Anime List are very good, but the extras are limited to promos, clean openings and closings, etc. If you are a fan of Anime, it is still worth picking up.

Killjoys: Season Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A TV show on the Syfy network. The show doesn’t have great ratings, but it does have a dedicated fanbase. The small ratings explains why there are no extras, on the other hand.

MST3K: Season 11 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I’ve had the Kickstarter Exclusive version of this Blu-ray for a while; however, this week, a retail version is being made available for everyone. How is this version compared to the Kickstarter edition? Is it still worth the money? Check out our review to find out.

Perfect Strangers: The Complete Third Season - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Normally I don’t mention releases like this, because catalog TV on DVD releases are usually so far down the sales list that it doesn’t make the cut. ... This release is close to the top five best-selling new releases of the week. In fact, depending on when you check, it could be in the top five.

The Post - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film was an Awards Season contender, but never quite broke through and wasn’t able to turn many of its nominations into wins. It is still the best-reviewed new release of the week and a clear Pick of the Week contender.

Sheep & Wolves - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Another film that normally wouldn’t be on this list, but it is a really slow week.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
The Commuter - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
The Post - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
The two biggest first run releases are also coming out on 4K this week. However, neither of them need to be seen in 4K to be enjoyed.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Mighty Orbots - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This show is over 30 years old. It is mostly forgotten, but there’s a small group out there who are super excited it is coming out this week.
