Estimates: Friday’s Numbers are a little on the Small(foot) Size

Smallfoot

New releases did well during previews, but returned to the levels we were predicting on Friday. Night School earned $9.5 million during its opening day, which isn’t enough to get to $30 million over the weekend, but it could be enough to match our $27 million prediction, or at least come within a rounding error of that figure. Audiences liked the movie more than critics did, as it earned an A minus from CinemaScore. Meanwhile, the film reportedly cost $29 million to make, so Universal should be happy with this result.

Likewise, Smallfoot opened where we expected it would before previews with $6.5 million on Friday, putting it on pace for close to $24 million over the weekend. This is actually significantly lower than The House with a Clock in its Wallsopening Friday, but this film earned better reviews and an A minus from CinemaScore, so it should have better legs. It will still need help internationally and on the home market to break even any time soon.

The House with a Clock in its Walls fell 60% from its opening Friday to just $3.09 million. It will bounce back a bit over the rest of the weekend, but it will still fall 55% to $12 million. That’s a huge decline for a family film. Granted, it will top its production budget over the weekend, so Universal shouldn’t be too upset with this result.

A Simple Favor is continuing its strong run with $2.1 million on Friday, which is better than expected. It will easily cross $40 million tomorrow and is on pace for $60 million domestically. It isn’t a monster hit, but it will break even early in its home market run, even if it can’t find an audience internationally.

Hell Fest debuted in fifth place with $2.0 million, but it won’t stay there long, as The Nun wasn’t far behind with $1.6 million. Its reviews are only 35% positive while it managed a C on CinemaScore, so it won’t have good legs. It could still match its $5.5 million production budget during its opening weekend and break even sometime during its home market run, but that’s it.
