International Box Office: Venom Secures Win, Closes in on Summer Vacation

October 17, 2018

Venom

Venom remained the top draw internationally earning $70.89 million on 20,248 screens in 83 markets for totals of $236.49 million internationally and $378.60 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market was France, where it opened in first place with $6.65 million on 703 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.04 million. It also opened in first place in Thailand with $2.14 million on 365 screens and in Vietnam with $1.05 million on 501 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.22 million. Its biggest market overall is South Korea, where it has amassed $25.41 million, including $4.38 million on 1,011 screens this past weekend. At this pace, the film will soon overtake Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, becoming Sony’s biggest hit released in 2018.

Wu Shuang remained in first place in China and second place internationally with $20.66 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $135.47 million. It is also playing in Australia, where it has made $251,000 after two weeks of release.

A Star is Born rose to third place with $20.9 million on 8,521 screens in 65 markets for a still early international total of $42.0 million. The film debuted in first place in Italy with $2.0 million on 589 screens. It had to settle for second place in Brazil with $1.5 million on 501 screens and third place in Mexico with $1.3 million on 950. The film’s biggest market overall was the U.K., where it earned $4.0 million on 925 screens for a two-week total of $12.5 million. This film isn’t doing as well internationally as it is domestically. That said, by this time next week, Warner Bros.’ share of the worldwide box office will likely be more than what it cost to make and advertise.

Smallfoot returned to the top five in fourth place with $14.7 million on 8,657 screens in 67 markets for totals of $53.0 million internationally and $110.4 million worldwide. The film opened in fourth place in the U.K. with $3.0 million on 884 screens. Granted, it was a very busy weekend with five new releases in the top ten, but this is still equivalent to a $15 million to $18 million opening here.

Johnny English Strikes Again rounded out the top five with $11.9 million in 56 markets for an international total of $82.7 million. The film will have no trouble getting past $100 million internationally, while it likely won’t get to $10 million domestically.

Incredibles 2 earned 12th place with $4.0 million in 17 markets for totals of $620.0 million internationally and $1.228 billion worldwide. It is still on pace to top The Fate of the Furious for 15th place, but it could be close.
