Theater Averages: The Favourite Lives Up to Its Name

November 29, 2018

The Favourite

The Favourite had the best theater average, not only of the weekend, but of the year. It pulled in $422,000 in 4 theaters for an average of $105,603, putting it ahead of the previous leader for 2018, Suspiria. It is a lot more mainstream and shouldn’t have a problem expanding significantly beyond this point. Shoplifters was well back with an average of $17,853 in five theaters. The overall box office leader, Ralph Breaks The Internet, was next with an average of $14,000. The World Before Your Feet was the latest documentary to open in the $10,000 club earning an average of $11,241 in two theaters. The final film in the $10,000 club was also a wide release, Creed II, which earned an average of $10,338.

There were only two new limited releases that we have numbers for and neither of them did well. Becoming Astrid missed the Mendoza Line with an average of just $1,787 in three theaters. Invisible Hands was even worse with $456 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Front Runner reached $1 million over the weekend, but its theater average is well below $1,000 so getting past $2 million will likely prove impossible.
  • Boy Erased hit $3 million before the weekend and $4 million over the weekend. It will likely start losing theaters, but $5 million is assured at this point and I wouldn’t bet against $6 million either. In fact, getting to $7.5 million isn’t out of the question.
  • Can You Ever Forgive Me? made it to $6 million, but that might be it for the film. This is too bad, as its reviews are award-worthy.
  • Green Book expanded semi-wide and that helped it get to $7.5 million over the weekend. Its theater average is good enough that it could expand more, but it won’t reach truly wide status, not unless it becomes one of the major Awards Season success stories.
