Aquaman

Aquaman had another significant expansion helping it keep first place with $95.2 million on 31,900 screens in 70 markets for totals of $415.5 million internationally and, including updated Domestic tallies, the global take is $488.2 million worldwide. It is ahead of every other film in the D.C.E.U. on the international chart, which is impressive. Its biggest new market was South Korea, where it earned first place with $7.94 million on 1,272 screens for a total opening of $10.08 million. It also opened in first place in France with $6.6 million on 607 screens, as well as in Germany with $4.9 million 805. The film’s biggest market overall was China, where it slipped to second with $23.41 million on 12,000 screens for a three-week total of $233.59 million.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse climbed a spot to second place with $37.44 million on 28,204 screens in 71 markets for a two-week total of $64.32 million. This is almost entirely due to the film’s first place debut in China, where it earned $25.94 million on 20,000 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $26.11 million. Animated films rarely do well in China, so this is an impressive opening. However, the film is still falling well short of its domestic number in most markets. That said, it is doing well enough domestically that it will break even and there should even be a spin-off / sequel for this film.

Bumblebee opened in third place with $31.1 million in 37 markets. The film had a number of strong openings in Asia, earning first place in Indonesia ($4.9 million); Malaysia ($2.6 million); Singapore ($1.2 million); and Thailand ($1.2 million). It also opened in first place in Australia with $2.09 million on 520 screens. On the other hand, it only managed fourth place in Germany with $1.8 million. Overall, I think Paramount will be pleased with these results.

The Grinch fell to fourth place with $23.7 million in 67 markets for totals of $169.3 million internationally and $422.8 million worldwide. Its only major market opening came in South Korea, where it earned fifth place with $1.13 million on 724 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.35 million.

Mary Poppings Returns opened in fifth place with $20.3 million in 17 markets. Nearly half of this figure came from its debut in the U.K. There, the film earned $9.4 million, while it also did well in Italy with $2.8 million. However, like its domestic debut, it missed expectations in most markets. For example, it only managed $2.0 million in France and $1.9 million in Germany.
