Theater Averages: This Week’s Chart is Feeling Sexy

January 2, 2019

On the Basis of Sex

It was a busy week on the theater average chart, as there were three new releases and three holdovers in the $10,000 club. On the Basis of Sex led the way with an average of $20,799 in 33 theaters. That’s an excellent start for a limited release playing in that many theaters. Second place went to Destroyer with an average of $18,449 in three theaters. The final new release in the $10,000 club was Stan and Ollie, which earn an average of $15,935 in five theaters. Cold War held on really well earning an average of $14,777 in three theaters. The overall box office leader, Aquaman, was next with an average of $12,634. If Beale Street Could Talk rounded out the $10,000 with an average of $11,788, and it managed this despite expanding its theater count to 65.

We only have numbers for one other new limited release, Simmba. The Bollywood film earned an impressive average of $5,732 in 301 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Shoplifters got to $1 million very early in the weekend and that’s likely not the end of the road for the film.
  • Simmba opened with more than $1 million.
  • On the Basis of Sex crossed $1 million during its opening weekend and nearly hit $2 million by the end of New Year’s Day.
  • If Beale Street Could Talk hit $1 million before the weekend and $2 million on New Year’s Eve.
  • Can You Ever Forgive Me? managed to get to $7.5 million, which is a pleasant surprise. It won’t get any further, not unless it wins some Oscars and gets a re-release to take advantage of that.
  • Mary Queen of Scots hit $7.5 million over the weekend and $10 million on New Year’s Eve.
  • The Favourite managed to top $15 million over the weekend and it is not done.
  • Green Book hit $30 million, which is quite a feat for a limited release.
