Can You Ever Forgive Me?

The fall smash hits and the Oscar contenders are starting to come out in full force, making it a great time on the home market. This week, we have one of the biggest hits of the fall, A Star is Born; one of the best movies of the year, Can You Ever Forgive Me?; and the Anime that arguably solidified Moe as powerhouse genre, K-ON: Complete Collection Premium Box Set. Of the three, I like K-ON the most, but I admit that price will scare away a lot of people, so Can You Ever Forgive Me? is the better choice for Pick of the Week.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only), Video on Demand (With Extras)
The screener arrived a little too late to get the review done last week, but I got it done over the weekend. Was it worth the wait? Does it live up to its Awards Season hype? Read our review for my opinion.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Another week where a screener arrived early enough to not be technically late, but too late to get the review done on time. I did get a get a chance to watch the film and it is certainly a Pick of the Week contender with better than average extras for a limited release: Audio commentary track, promotional featurettes, and deleted scenes. However, it might take more than a few days to finish the review, because it’s Oscar week and that’s one of the busiest weeks of the year.

Doctor Who: Resolution - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
There are a lot of negative reviews for this release, but apparently people were pre-ordering it, which gave them access to the trailer immediately and they thought they paid for the trailer and nothing else. The actual reviews are over 95% positive, so this is one of the better holiday specials.

K-ON: Complete Collection Premium Box Set - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
One of my favorite Animes of all time. It tells the story of the five members of the light music club and the band they form, After School Tea Time. It is widely seen at the start of the Moe boom, but the show is about more than just cute and endearing girls doing cute and endearing things. It is a coming-of-age show that focuses on friendship and girls supporting each other. The box set it expensive, but it includes both seasons, the movie, soundtrack, a ton of physical extras, etc. It is a Pick of the Week contender, but that price is an issue for all but the most hardcore fans.

The Last Race - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A documentary about a struggling Long Island race track that might be forced to shut down. The reviews are more than 90% positive, but it never found an audience in theaters. I appears to be doing better on the home market; I really hope it does better on the home market.

Mazinger Z: Infinity - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A rather average entry in the Mecha Anime subgenre.

Overlord - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This slice of Nazisploitation wasn’t able to find an audience in theaters despite earning strong reviews. Will it do better on the home market? Or is the target audience just too small to thrive? Check out our review for my opinion.

Retro VHS Blu-rays:
The Legend of Billie Jean - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Neighbors - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Sheena - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Songwriter - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Four more low-budget Blu-rays coming out as part of the Retro VHS line. The packaging is made to look like a VHS box, but it is not actually a VHS box. I’ve seen complaints that they are not actual VHS boxes, which is strange, because a Blu-ray can’t fit inside a VHS box. Songwriter is the best of this group, but Sheena appears to be selling the most.

Robin Hood - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I forgot this movie came out. I think most people involved in making the movie hope everyone forgets all about it.

A Star is Born - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
One of the biggest box office hits of the fall. It also earned amazing reviews and could be one of the big winners on Oscar night. Unfortunately, the extras are a little on the weak side, with a 30-minute making-of featurette, and three other extras that focus on the music: Compilation of musical performances from the movie, extended / deleted musical performances, and music videos. That’s still enough to be a contender for Pick of the Week.

Overlord - Review - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Robin Hood - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
A Star is Born - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
A Star is Born is probably the best bet for 4K this week. Overlord is worth picking up for fans of grindhouse horror, but I don’t think it will benefit as much from 4K. Robin Hood is just avoidable in any format.

It’s a really busy week for secondary VOD releases. There are some big hits, some Oscar contenders, as well as big bombs and busted Oscar-bait. ... And a live-action Kim Possible (with Patton Oswalt as the bad guy!).
