Weekend Estimates: Shazam Flies to First Place with over $50 million

April 7, 2019

Shazam

Shazam is easily topping the weekend box office chart with an estimated $53.45 million for a total of $56.78 million, including its previous special engagement. This is marginally better than our prediction, but not as strong as I thought it would be after its surprising previews. The film should have strong legs with its amazing reviews, its A from CinemaScore, and its family-friendly target audience. On the other hand, Avengers: Endgame is on its way, and that film could practically end Shazam’s run at the box office. Internationally, Shazam is opening with an estimated $102 million in 79 markets. This includes $30.9 million in China, as well as $6.2 million in Mexico. On the other hand, it only managed $5.3 million in the U.K., which is far less impressive than its debut here.

Pet Sematary is opening on the low end of expectations with $25 million, which is still a great start for a film that cost $21 million to make. The film’s reviews are a major asset, but it only managed a C plus from CinemaScore, which is merely average for a horror film. Because of this, I don’t expect its legs to be great. That said, they won’t need to be great for the film to become a financial success after a start like this.

If estimates hold, then Dumbo will fall 60% during its sophomore stint with $18.2 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $76.3 million. This is a really sharp decline for a family film, so much so that I’m now really worried about its chances of breaking even. It is doing better internationally, earning $39.6 million this weekend for a two-week total of $137.5 million. However, unless it becomes a huge hit on the home market, or is watched a ton on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, it might not break even any reasonable timeframe.

Us is also falling faster than expected, down $13.81 million for a three-week total of $152.40 million. However, unlike the previous film, this one has already broken even. The film isn’t doing as well internationally, earning $10.3 million over the weekend for a total of $64.2 million so far.

Captain Marvel is holding on better than expected with $12.68 million over the weekend for a total of $374.13 million after a month of release. Internationally, it is earning $14.1 million for a total of $663.5 million.

As expected, The Best of Enemies is opening in sixth place. Unfortunately, it is opening below expectations with an estimated weekend of $4.5 million. Its reviews are mixed, but it did earn an A from CinemaScore, so that could help its legs. On the other hand, the opening is weak enough that I don’t think the film will stick around in theaters for very long, as the upcoming competition will need as many screens as possible.

It was a good week for limited releases, with three films opening well enough according to estimates that they will place in the $10,000 club on the theater average chart. This includes High Life with an average of $25,007 in four theaters. Amazing Grace is next with an average of $13,902 in 8 theaters. Finally, Peterloo is earning an average of $10,142 in three theaters.
