International Box Office: Shazam Flies Higher than Dumbo

April 17, 2019

Shazam

Shazam remained in first place on the international chart, despite not opening in any new markets, major or otherwise. This caused it to fall to $35.3 million on 24,633 screens in 79 markets lifting its totals to internationally and $258.4 million worldwide. The film fell 84% in China down to $4.79 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $40.30 million. It held on better in the U.K., down 47% to $2.83 million in 611 theaters for a two-week total of $11.65 million. The film’s last major market is Japan and it opens there this week. If it does well there, then it will have no trouble crossing $400 million worldwide, which is a great run for a film that cost $85 million to make.

Dumbo rose to second place with $22.0 million in 55 markets for totals of $177.0 million internationally and $267.2 million worldwide. The film has no more markets left to open in and unlike the previous film, this one cost a lot to make. Reports vary, but most fall in the $150 million to $175 million range.

Fan Tang Feng Bao 4 remained in first place in China earning $18.54 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $89.26 million. Add in a handful of other markets and the film managed $19.57 million in six markets for a total of $91.25 million.

Pet Sematary remained in fourth place with $12.6 million in 56 markets over the weekend for a two-week total of $35.7 million. The film pulled in $2.3 million in France, which is not as strong as its opening here, but still good enough for a film that cost $21 million to make.

After opened better internationally than it did domestically earning fifth place with $11.71 million in 28 markets. The film earned $3.69 million in Italy and $2.9 million in Germany. That’s much better than its debut here, relative to the size of the markets. On the other hand, the film failed to crack $1 million in Mexico ($619,000); Spain ($486,000); and Brazil ($254,000).

Captain Marvel fell out of the top five, but it is closing in on $1.1 billion, so it is still worth tracking as it tries to get there. This weekend it pulled in $8.0 million in 52 markets for totals of $678.0 million internationally and $1.065 billion worldwide. The film won’t catch Captain America: Civil War on the MCU chart, but it should top $1.1 billion shortly after Avengers: Endgame debuts.
