Home Market Releases for June 11th, 2019

June 12, 2019

Captain Marvel

It is a very busy week on the home market, but like last week, there’s a lot of what would be filler in a normal week. In fact, there’s only one big release, Captain Marvel, which is also one of the better releases on this week’s list. The only other release that was really in contention for Pick of the Week was The Mustang, but the lack of extras on the Blu-ray hurt its chances.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand or Video on Demand (With Bonus Features)
I put in a request for this film and they said it was shipped, but the screener hasn’t arrived yet. I did get a chance to watch it on VOD with friends and I did enjoy it. It does suffer from some of the problems most prequels suffer from, namely we know the fates of many of these characters, so it is hard to be surprised when the Kree turn out to be the bad guys, for example. That said, I think it did enough within the origin story to be a welcome addition to the M.C.U. Furthermore, there are plenty of extras, more than enough to be a contender for Pick of the Week.

Captive State - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
A Sci-fi film that takes place on Earth after an alien invasion. It focuses on the humans, those who now work with the aliens and those who still resist. The reviews are mixed, but nowhere near as bad as its box office numbers. It is worth checking out and the extras are much better than expected, given its box office troubles. That said, it is still only worth a rental.

The Entity: Collector's Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
A supernatural horror movie supposedly based on a true story. I hate it when horror movies do that, because it feels like a crutch, like the filmmakers don’t have faith in the film being scary on its own, so they have to pretend it was real to get audiences interested. Pretending it is real doesn’t make it scarier. There is a good mix of new and archival extras on the Blu-ray and if you are a fan of the film, then it is worth picking up.

Five Feet Apart - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Another installment in the “Sick Girl” Young Adult Novel adaptation subgenre. Its reviews are solidly mediocre, while it did okay at the box office. The extras are better than expected with an audio commentary track, a quartet of featurettes, deleted / alternative scenes, and more. It is worth checking out for fans of the genre, maybe even purchasing, if you are a fan of the cast.

Frankenstein Created Woman: Collection’s Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
One of several releases on the main list that would be relegated to the secondary Blu-ray list on a normal week. It isn’t a bad movie, but it isn’t great either. If you are a fan of Hammer Horror in general, then it is worth checking out. The Blu-ray is loaded with extras, including a new audio commentary track and an archival one, interviews, featurettes, and much more. If you are a fan of the movie, then it is worth picking up.

Ghostbusters Double-Shot: Steelbook - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
I can’t recommend this release for a few reasons, mainly only the first film is worth owning. Also, I don’t like Steelbooks, because they take up too much space on my movie shelf. Finally, this movie has been released way too many times to justify another purchase.

Leprechaun Returns - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
I’m surprised this franchise is still going. It was never a success at the box office, nor was it a critical darling, even by low-budget horror standards. Yet here we are 25 years after the first film came out with yet another installment. It would normally be in the secondary Blu-ray list below, but again, it is a shallow week.

Magnum P.I.: Season One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Stick with the original. It is so much better.

Mean Girls - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This film came out 15 years ago. It was a surprise hit topping expectations, both with the critics and at the box office. It still works and if you haven’t seen it in a while, it is worth watching again. On the other hand, I can’t seem to find any data on the extras or if it is worth a double-dip. Not even the PR release had any details.

The Mustang

The Mustang - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is one of the best limited releases of the year and it also did some of the biggest box office business as well. Sadly, there appears to be no extras on the DVD or Blu-ray. It is still worth owning, but a full set of extras would have made it the Pick of the Week.

Naruto Shippuden Uncut: Set 38 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is the final DVD for one of the longest running Anime of all time. I assume there will be a full-set Megaset coming soon, then they will start from the top selling them on Blu-ray.

NEW GAME!: Season One + NEW GAME!!: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
A Moe slice-of-life Anime. That is to say, it is about a group of cute and endearing girls doing cute and endearing things. Specifically, it is about a group of girls who work for a video game company. I’ve seen some people complain that the show isn’t an accurate representation of what it is like working for a video game company, but that’s not the point of the show. It is just a fun relaxing show to watch at the end of the day.

Orange Is The New Black: Season 6 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
The last two seasons of the show have not lived up to expectations, but the show is still worth watching and if you’ve purchased the previous seasons, there’s no reason to stop now. That said, it is no longer a Pick of the Week contender, like the first several seasons were. Also coming out this week is the Seasons One - Five Box Set, but it is only on DVD.

The Prisoner

The Prisoner: Special Edition - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This screener arrived late, very late, and whenever I thought I would finally have a chance to review it, some other screener arrived that was more pressing to review. Was the film worth the wait? Read our review for my opinion.

Swing Time: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The last big Ginger Rogers / Fred Astaire hit and it is getting the Criterion Collection treatment. Extras include a mix of new and archival features, including audio commentary track, interviews, featurettes and more. It is certainly worth picking up.

Timeless: Series Finale - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This show lasted only two seasons and was technically canceled three times. (It was canceled after the first season and then brought back. Canceled after the second season and then brought back for this two-part series finale.) If you stuck with it, you are at least rewarded with some closure, unlike with so many other shows that were gone too quickly.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Steelbook - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
They Might Be Giants - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There are some good movies on this week’s list of Secondary Blu-ray releases, but most of them have been released way too many times to bother with. Can’t Stop the Music is legendarily bad and that will make it irresistible to some out there.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Fast and the Furious 8-Film Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Fast and Furious - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Fast Five - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is mediocre while the Fast and the Furious films have been released so many times that it has gone behind self-parody at this point.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. is amazing and if you don’t have it on DVD yet, you should buy it.

Say My Name - Reviews - Video on Demand
There are no major VOD titles on this week’s list. That said, both High Life and Plus One are worth checking out.
