Friday Estimates: Good Does Great

August 17, 2019

Good Boys

Good Boys earned first place on the Friday chart with $8.31 million. Universal is projecting a $20.8 million opening weekend based on this start, which would give the film a rather low internal multiplier. This is due to its reviews and its mere B plus from CinemaScore, neither of which are bad, but they are not great either. It would still be the fastest opening for a comedy all year and this is the first R-rated comedy to top the chart since The Boss debuted more than three years ago. On the one hand, this is great news for Good Boys. On the other hand, what the hell happened to the genre? R-rated comedies used to regularly earn $100 million or more at the box office.

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw earned second place on Friday with $3.81 million, putting it on pace for over $13 million over the weekend. This beats our predictions, albeit by a small margin.

Likewise, The Lion King is matching expectations with $3.2 million on Friday putting it on pace for just under $12 million over the full weekend.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged missed expectations by a large margin. Its $3.15 million on Friday puts it on pace for about $8 million over the full weekend. Its reviews are mixed and it earned a C plus from CinemaScore, which is on par with most horror movies, so that’s not the issue. The issue is a crowded marketplace, especially for horror films, and a lack of demand for a 47 Meters Down franchise. While the film earned fourth place on Friday, it won’t stay there long, as a few films below it will bounce back over the rest of the weekend.

This includes Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. That earned $3.0 million on Friday, down 66% from its opening Friday, and this is actually a better-than-average hold for a horror film. It should earn close to $10 million over the full weekend.

Sadly, The Angry Birds Movie isn’t matching low expectations with just $2.75 million on Friday. Sony is projecting $9.42 million over the weekend and $15.15 million during its six-day debut. Its reviews are better than anticipated, but it only managed a B plus from CinemaScore, which is weak for a family film. Any plans to turn the the franchise into a trilogy ended on Friday.

Blinded By the Light earned the best reviews among the new releases, and the best CinemaScore too, with an A minus rating. However, it performed near the bottom of the pile on Friday with just $1.38 million leaving it on pace for just over $4 million over the weekend.

Where’s You Go, Bernadette is struggling more than anticipated and most thought it would bomb to begin with. It pulled in $1.22 million on Friday, including $200,000 in previews. It will only manage $4 million over the weekend. Its reviews clearly hurt and audiences only gave it a B from CinemaScore, so the critics were not unfair to the film.
