Weekend Estimates: Chapter Two is Number Two on September Chart

September 8, 2019

It: Chapter Two

It: Chapter Two is missing expectations with an estimated opening weekend of $91.0 million. However, while this is 10% lower than predicted, it is still more than enough to earn second place on the September chart. In fact, it is nearly 70% higher than the third biggest September debut of all time, The Nun, which opened this weekend last year. That’s really going to help the year-over-year comparison. As for the film’s long-range chances, they are mixed. Horror movies rarely have long legs and this is also true of sequels, so horror sequels almost never do well long-term. Additionally, this film’s reviews are much weaker than the first film’s reviews, but on the positive side, it did match its predecessor when it came to the CinemaScore, as both earned B plus ratings.

It: Chapter Two did about as well internationally as it did domestically earning $94 million on 25,945 screens in 75 markets making it the second biggest international weekend for a horror film, behind It. Some highlights include $10.2 million on 4,571 screens in Mexico, $9.4 million on 1,998 screens in the U.K., and $8.8 million on 3,215 screens in Russia. The film has yet to open in France and Japan, as well as some other smaller markets, so it should have no trouble becoming a monster hit.

Angel Has Fallen is holding on better than expected earning an estimated $6.0 million over the weekend pushing its running tally to $53.5 million after three weeks of release. It will catch up to London Has Fallen, at least domestically. It is too soon to tell where it will end up internationally.

Good Boys is matching expectations with $5.39 million over the weekend for a total of $66.85 million after four weeks of release.

The Lion King is next with an estimated $4.19 million over the weekend for a total of $529.11 million after eight weeks of release.

Overcomer and Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw are as close as expected with $3.75 million and $3.72 million respectively. This is so close that I wouldn’t be surprised if the two films trade places when the final numbers are out.
