Friday Estimates: Ford v Ferrari Laps the Competition

November 16, 2019

Ford v Ferrari

Ford v Ferrari is going to dominate the weekend chart. In fact, it earned more on Friday than the second place film is expected to earn during the full weekend. The film pulled in $10.94 million during its opening day, putting it on pace for $30 million over the full weekend, which is significantly ahead of our prediction. Its reviews and its A plus from CinemaScore should result in stellar word-of-mouth. It might even do well during Awards Season, although if it does win any Oscars, I think it will be limited to technical categories.

Charlie’s Angels only managed $3.15 million on Friday and Sony is projecting just $8.1 million for the weekend after this result, which likely won’t be enough to open in second place. Its reviews and its B plus from CinemaScore are fine, so there has to be another reason the film is flopping. Most like answer: Not enough people care about the franchise anymore. It’s the same reason Doctor Sleep didn’t meet expectations.

Midway managed $2.5 million on Friday, down 61% from its opening Friday. It will bounce back over the rest of the weekend and earn close to $9 million. This is close enough to our prediction that I’m calling it a victory.

Last Christmas landed in fourth place on Friday with $2.0 million, but it won’t stay there long, as Playing with Fire was right behind with $1.9 million and the latter is a family film and will bounce back a lot more on Saturday. The two films are projected to earn $6.3 million and $7.3 million respectively over the full weekend. This does mean Doctor Sleep will likely be pushed out of the top five, as it was down 68% from its opening Friday to just $1.69 million.

The Good Liar missed the top five with an opening day of just $1.64 million, putting it on pace for just $5 million over the full weekend. Its reviews are good, but not great. Unfortunately, it only managed a B from CinemaScore, which is well below what it needed to thrive. If this does hurt its legs significantly, it could miss the Mendoza Line during its opening weekend.
