Theater Averages: Frances has a Saintly Start

March 6, 2020

Saint Frances

Saint Frances was the only new release to land in the $10,000 club opening with $14,298 in one theater. The re-release of Come and See continued to do well earning $12,859, also in one theater. Emma expanded into nearly 100 theaters earning an average of $11,955 along the way.

None of the rest of the new limited releases came particularly close to the $10,000 mark. The Whistlers was the best of the rest with an average of $6,819 in three theaters. Meanwhile, Wendy and Greed had similar openings with averages of $6,554 and $6,041 respectively. Both films were playing in four theater each. My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising opened semi-wide earning an average of $4,673 in over 1,000 theaters. This is even more impressive than it first sounds, as it opened on Wednesday, and its five-day average was $7,350. Straight Up and Burden had nearly identical opening averages earning $4,075 and $4,032 respectively. However, Burden was playing in more theaters, five compared to one to be precise. Lost in America was next with an average of $3,399 in two theaters. Finally there was Met Opera: Agrippina, which opened with an average of $1,150 in 1,000 theaters. However, it held special engagements and not a full release, which is a mitigating factor.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Met Opera: Agrippina earned $1 million during its special engagement, so obviously it reached the $1 million milestone in the process.
  • Portrait of a Lady on Fire reached $2 million during just its third weekend of release. However, its theater average is low enough that expanding significantly beyond this point could be difficult.
  • My Boyfriend’s Meds also reached $2 million. It might not last long enough to top $3 million.
  • Impractical Jokers: The Movie got to $3 million before the weekend and then expanded wide enough to get to $4 million, $5 million, and $6 million over the weekend.
  • My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising earned $5 million during its opening weekend and managed nearly $10 million during its five-day debut.
  • Parasite managed to get all the way to $50 million during its run, which is a very rare feat for a limited release.
