Home Market Releases for March 17th, 2020

The Point

It’s a relatively good week on the home market, as we have Jumanji: The Next Level coming out. On the other hand, that’s the only big release of the week, at least on physical media. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is hitting Video on Demand. Neither are Pick of the Week contenders, although Jumanji could get there when the screener arrives. As for the best of the rest, The Point: Ultimate Edition and Superman: Red Son Blu-ray / 4K Ultra HD are worth checking out. The Point came out a while ago, but the screener arrived late. That said, it is still the best release on this week’s list.

Attack on Titan: Season 3 - Part 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This anime series is still one of the most popular currently airing, although I don’t hold as high of an opinion of the show as most do. The Blu-ray is also expensive, even compared to the average anime release. That said, it also has better extras.

Black Christmas - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is the third version of this teenage slasher and was the worst-performing version at the box office. That’s too bad, because it does have an interesting premise. Take the typical teenage slasher and replace the disposable female victims with proactive characters and give the movie an anti-misogyny message. Unfortunately, the execution is so poor that even people who agree with that message are going to be turned off by this one. Maybe it is worth a rental for the curious, but that’s it.

Jumanji: The Next Level - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film was one of the few bright spots at the box office while it was in theaters. I put in a request for a screener, but it hasn’t arrived yet. Hopefully it will get here soon, but the COVID-19 outbreak could be disrupting supply chains. The DVD / Blu-ray set is loaded with extras, but I don’t know if there are just a lot of very short featurettes or something more substantial. If it is the latter, then it is a Pick of the Week contender. Also coming out this week are two franchise box sets.

The Point

The Point: Ultimate Edition - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Video on Demand
When I first got a chance to review The Point, my immediate thought was it’s a beloved classic. However, the more research I did on the film, the more I realized I was the only person I knew who remembered the movie. There are almost no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, for example. I was clearly wrong about the film’s popularity. Was I also wrong about the film’s quality? Read my review to find out.

One Piece: Stampede - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This franchise has been going on for so long that they’ve released more than a dozen movies to go with the countless TV episodes, as well as the original ongoing manga. This is not a good place to jump in if you are not a fan of the franchise, but if you are interested in anime and are in a COVID-19-induced lockdown, now is a great time to start watching. Just start at the beginning.

Richard Jewell - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
I was looking forward to this movie, because it is based on an interesting story that has real implications today with mob mentality we see on the internet. However, then I learned they changed the story to claim one of the female reporters was sleeping with an FBI agent to get access. You can’t make a movie about the media lying about an innocent person for a story and then lie about the media in response. It ruins the movie.

Superman: Red Son

Superman: Red Son - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
This animated movie is based on a comic that tells the story of an alternate Earth where Superman lands in Russia instead of Kansas. It is widely regarded as one of the best Superman stories and the adaptation is top-notch. The extras are a little light, but still enough to be a Pick of the Week contender.
