VOD Releases: We Are All Counting on Mr. Jones

July 1, 2020

Mr. Jones

This week’s list of VOD releases is dominated by biopics and documentaries. This includes some of the bigger releases as well, led by Mr. Jones. There are also a couple of TV shows hitting VOD that are worth checking out: Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season Seven and Penny Dreadful: City of Angels: Season One.

Highlights

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season Seven
Amazon
This show consistently earned great reviews, although it has never been a ratings darling. On a side note, the recent protests against police violence has led the producers of the show to drop a bunch of scripts for the upcoming season to rewrite them to talk about this political issue. I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

Force of Nature
Amazon VOD, Amazon 4K UHD VOD, Google Play, iTunes, or Vudu
Remember when Mel Gibson was one of the biggest movie stars in the world? For more and more people, the answer to that is question is “no.” Furthermore, movies like this will make sure that won’t change any time soon.

Lupin III: Goodbye Parter
Amazon VOD (English Dub) or Amazon VOD (Subtitles)
This is one of the longest-running anime franchises of all time and for good reasons. Unfortunately, this is not among the best-received installments, but it is still worth a rental.

Mr. Jones
Google Play, iTunes, or Vudu
A biopic about investigative journalist, Gareth Jones, who travels to Moscow in the 1930s to interview Stalin, only to discover the mass starvation in Ukraine. This real-life story served as the inspiration for Animal Farm, which should be enough to get lots of people interested. Also, it is earning stellar reviews, so fans of political thrillers should be very excited to see it.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels: Season One
iTunes
Natalie Dormer leads the ensemble cast in this Penny Dreadful spin-off. The reviews are good, so fans of the original will want to check it out. They are not so good that those disappointed with the first show should be excited to see this one, but fans of the genre should at least watch the first episode.

Scheme Birds
Google Play
While this documentary is not earning a lot of buzz, the interest it it is earning is overwhelmingly positive. The movie is about a troubled teenager, Gemma, living in Scottish town with a depressed economy. There are a ton of biopics and documentaries on this week’s list, which means the direct competition is too much for most to overcome, but hopefully this one will be a bright spot.
