Streaming Releases: Overcoming the Curse

Cursed: Season One

Three documentaries feature on this week’s new releases on the streaming platforms. Two of them, We Are Freestyle Love Supreme and The Last Dance, could find large audiences online, and Father Soldier Son is worth checking out too. The dark fantasy series, Cursed: Season One, also has a shot at being a hit for Netflix.

Movies

Father Soldier Son
Netflix
This documentary takes a decade-long look at a military family. The reviews are great, and it should find a receptive audience in the military community, and hopefully beyond.

We Are Freestyle Love Supreme
Hulu
A documentary about Lin-Manuel Miranda’s pre-Hamilton days. Its reviews are amazing, and the timing of its release couldn’t be better, so it should attract a lot of viewers on Hulu.

Other Movies

Fatal Affair - Netflix
Jack Whitehall: I'm Only Joking - Netflix

TV Shows

Cursed: Season One
Netflix
Katherine Langford stars in this reimagining of the Arthurian legend. She plays Nimue, who is fated to become the Lady of the Lake. There are only a few reviews online so far, but most of them are positive, if not enthusiastic. The show has promise and a lot of its cast are great in their respective roles. It should be at least a decent performer for Netflix, but whether it can knock The Old Guard from the top of the daily chart.

Into the Dark: The Current Occupant
Hulu
The latest installment in Hulu’s horror anthology series. So far, the individual episodes of this show have been earning reviews that range from mixed to stellar, so the consistency has been an issue. This makes it harder to recommend each episode, because you don’t know where on that spectrum it will end up, but checking online reviews and dipping into the better ones makes this a show worth checking out for horror fans.

The Last Dance
Netflix
A docuseries about Michael Jordan’s final season with the Chicago Bulls. Obviously fans of the basketball in general, or of Michael Jordan in particular, will enjoy this series more than most. However, it is good enough that even people who are not sports fans will find something engaging here. It earned stellar reviews and big audiences when it aired on ESPN in April and May, and is now coming to Netflix in the US (it’s already been playing on Netflix internationally).

Other TV Shows

Absentia: Season Three - Amazon
The Business of Drugs - Nexflix
Dark Desire: Season One - Netflix
Indian Matchmaking: Season One - Netflix
Kissing Game: Season One - Netflix
