VOD Releases: Say Yes to New Releases

July 29, 2020

Yes, God, Yes

This week’s line-up of new films on VOD features several films well worth a rental. In our main list, only You Should Have Left is a miss, and has some redeeming qualities. Yes, God, Yes is the one I would recommend the most, but An Accidental Studio comes a close second. Here are this week’s new releases on VOD.

Highlights

An Accidental Studio
Amazon, Google Play, Vudu
A documentary about HandMade films, the movie studio George Harrison started to help artists make movies no one else had faith in. This film could have done really well in the art house circuit, but I fear it will struggle on the home market. It’s definitely worth checking out.

The Big Ugly
iTunes
Anglo-American relations go bad when London mob bosses invest in a West Virginia oil deal in hopes of laundering dirty money. This film reached the top five at the box office this past weekend, and it is getting a VOD release this Friday. On the one hand, Vertical Entertainment is probably very happy with its box office debut. On the other hand, perhaps they wish it could stay a theatrical exclusive for a little longer. In any case, it’s a good fit for VOD, in spite of mixed reviews.

James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction
Amazon
A documentary series in which James Cameron explores the world of science fiction. The reviews are solid and there’s an impressive number of filmmakers featured in the series. It’s worth checking out.

Orange is the New Black: The Final Season
Amazon
This critically-acclaimed TV show ended on a high note. If you haven’t had a chance to see it on Netflix, buying it on VOD for $15 isn’t a bad deal.

Yes, God, Yes
Amazon, Google Play, or Vudu
A coming-of-age story starring Natalia Dyer. This film got a Virtual Release on Friday and hits VOD this week. It will most likely do better on the home market, as virtual releases have almost universally failed to make an impact. The film is earning enough critical praise that, if things were normal, it could have even done well enough in limited release to earn some measure of mainstream success.

You Should Have Left
Amazon
This supernatural horror film was supposed to get a theatrical release but went PVOD instead. It is now out on regular VOD and let’s face it, it is worth a $6 rental and no more. It has pacing issues, as it never gets moving enough to generate real scares.
