New on Disc: Go Go Gamera!

Gamera: The Complete Collection

TV on DVD continues to dominate the home market, as it does this time every year. Some releases are worth picking up, including Batwoman: The Complete First Season (DVD or Blu-ray) and The Terror: Infamy (DVD). However, the best of the best is Gamera: The Complete Collection Blu-ray. It is expensive, but you could make it your full-time job to watch every piece of content on the 8-disc set and it would take you a week to do so.

Highlights

Batwoman: The Complete First Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Ruby Rose stars as the titular Batwoman, at least during the first season. The actress was injured in a stunt not too long before she began filming this series and by then end of the first season, she decided she didn’t take a long enough break to recover and quit due to the strain. That’s too bad, because her performance in the show was great. Extras on the first season are not great, but they are not bad either with a behind-the-scenes featurette, the best of the ComicCon panel, deleted scenes, and outtakes. It is worth picking up, but not quite a Pick of the Week contender.

Blue Bloods: The Tenth Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is one of the best-selling releases on this week’s list. It is very consistent in its quality, but it doesn’t do enough to stand out in a historically crowded genre. Granted, there are not as many police procedurals on TV as there used to be, but there are still too many to recommend any of them.

Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
The latest animated installment in the DCEU. There are few reviews online, and while they are mostly positive, they are not enthusiastic. There’s a lot of sixes and sevens out of ten. There are almost no extras, which further hurts its overall value. Call it a solid rental.

Flash Gordon - Buy from Amazon: Special Edition Blu-ray, Limited Edition 2-Disc Blu-ray, Limited Edition 2-Disc 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
This is not a good movie. However, for the most part, it is energetic enough that it has a particular camp appeal that has helped it age well and become a cult classic over the past 40 years. There are plenty of extras on the two-disc limited-edition release, including some archival and some new. If you like the movie, then it is certainly worth picking up. If you’ve never seen it, then give it a rental on Video on Demand to see if it you like it enough to buy the special edition release.

Gamera: The Complete Collection

Gamera: The Complete Collection - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Gamera is often considered to be a Godzilla rip-off. That’s not fair, but it was certainly made in response to the previous franchise’s box office success. This 8-disc, 12-movie box set includes tons of extras, including audio commentary tracks, interviews, retrospectives, introductions, several alternate versions, etc. It is very expensive, especially with so many people struggling right now, but it would make a fantastic gift when Christmas rolls around.

The Outpost - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is one of the few hits of pandemic era, and it has been a fixture on the DEG Watched at Home chart since its first release. This week it is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray and the extras are impressive. They include an audio commentary track, making-of / real-story featurette, raw footage, etc. It is worth picking up, but not quite Pick of the Week material.
