Weekend predictions: Uncharted unchallenged on slow weekend

Uncharted

With next weekend’s release of The Batman looming large over the market, the major studios are sitting things out this weekend. Studio 666 and Cyrano are both arriving in wide release (just barely so in the case of Cyrano), but neither is likely to challenge Uncharted at the top of the chart.

Here’s what the model thinks of this weekend’s widest new release.

Studio 666 is a tricky film to predict, and the model used a collection of recent horror comedies as its baseline. I think its prediction might be a little high, but the film is playing in enough theaters, 2,306 to be precise, to have a chance of doing decent business. $2 million would be a good weekend for this one, in my opinion.

Cyrano will give us some more clues about the strength of the market for “date night” movies, which is a sector of the business that has performed particular poorly throughout the pandemic. Marry Me’s recent debut suggested that things may be improving. Cyrano is opening in relatively few theaters, but it has excellent reviews and could produce a good theater average. I think it has a shot at topping the model’s prediction.

With the two new wide releases unlikely to do more than a few million dollars each, the market is going to decline dramatically from Presidents Day weekend. Uncharted shouldn’t have any trouble holding on to to spot, even with a steep drop from its opening. In fact, there’s a good chance we’ll see the same top five as last weekend if Studio 666 comes in below its prediction.
