Top Gun: Maverick

After crushing it at the box office last weekend, Top Gun: Maverick ascends even higher than its record breaking opening theater count, adding 16 additional theaters to its already vast location count this week, coming in this week in 4,751 theaters. Two other wide releases land in theaters this week in Watcher and David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future with the former set to debut in 764 locations, while the latter in an estimated 900 theaters. This week is much more subdued regarding new releases as next week another monster franchise sequel will release by way of Jurassic World: Dominion, which is projected to arrive in about 4,500 locations.

By breaking Memorial weekend records in its freshman effort, Top Gun: Maverick looks to be in control heading into its second week. The film earned $126.7 million in its opening three days, while compiling an impressive $160.5 million over the four-day holiday weekend. The weekend numbers were nearly identical outside of North America as it accumulated $124 million overseas. At the end of Thursday, the film has acquired just over $191 million domestically.

While Maverick is still the top news, the aforementioned Watcher and Crimes of the Future are both worthy of mention in their own regards. Written and directed by David Cronenberg, Crimes of the Future is the latest from Neon. The internationally produced movie is a body horror film that stars Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart. Watcher is a psychological serial killer film starring Maika Monroe as Julia, an American who moves to Bucharest with her boyfriend, then begins to believe she is constantly being watched by an ominous neighbor. Rounding out the top five this week, we see Downton Abbey: A New Era still showing in a strong 3,451 locations, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Bob’s Burgers Movie come in with 3,765 and 3,425 theaters respectively, and lastly the box office champ from seven weeks ago, The Bad Guys, playing in 2,869 movie houses.

Another long list of limited releases are hitting theaters this week. The latest from Benediction can be seen in 87 theaters across North America. Based on a true story, this film explores the turbulent life of World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon. Also opening in limited release is the French film, After Blue (Dirty Paradise). The sci-fi adventure film will be available in 11 locations. Other films arriving to the big screen this weekend include the Japanese film Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko, the golf comedy, The Phantom of the Open, and the music documentary, We Are the Thousand.
