The Woman King

A new troupe of wide releases will make their theatrical launches this week with the largest being that of the historic epic The Woman King. This week however isn’t all about the new arrivals as there are still plenty of opportunities to see some older films still playing in theaters.

Debuting in 3,765 locations this week, the Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed The Woman King tracks the all-female warrior unit who protected the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1820s. Leading the charge is Viola Davis who trains the future warriors to fight their enemies. Next up is the latest horror film from director T.I. West in Pearl, set to open in a projected 3,000 locations. Also appearing in North American cinemas for the first time is See How They Run. The mystery-comedy with a stellar ensemble cast will be available in a respectable 2,404 theaters. Leading off its theatrical run in 1,080 locations this week is the baseball feature Running The Bases. The faith-based movie stars Brett Varvel as small-town baseball coach who must deal with the repercussions of his coaching methods after receiving his dream coaching job. To finish out the new wide releases, the thriller film, God’s Country debuts on the big screen this weekend. The film starring Thandiwe Newton makes its entrance in 785 movie houses.

Coming in as our third-widest release this week is DC League of Super-Pets. The animated feature made its North American debut in late July and has since tallied up $85 million in domestic earnings. While those numbers are honorable, they don’t compare to the fourth-widest release of the week as the $707 million earner Top Gun: Maverick settles in with 2,604 locations as it enters its 17th week at the box office. Rounding out the top six are two Sony Pictures releases in Bullet Train at 2,602 theaters and The Invitation coming in at 2,425 locations.

Per usual there are copious amounts of limited releases hitting cinemas this week including the Greg Mottola directed comedy Confess, Fletch. The reboot starring Jon Hamm as Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher arrives in a moderate 516 theaters. Other films showing for the first time include The Silent Twins. Kicking off in 279 locations, the biographical drama stars Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance as the twin Gibbons sisters, who after a spree of vandalism inspired by an American boy they both idolized, were summarily sentenced to Broadmoor, an infamous psychiatric hospital, where they faced the choice to separate and survive or die together. Last but not least the kaleidoscopic Moonage Daydream is set to open in 170 IMAX locations. The film illuminates the life and genius of David Bowie, one of the most prolific and influential artists of the 20th Century. The film is set to expand wide next week.

Next week also sees the release of Don’t Worry Darling. The thriller directed by Olivia Wilde and starring an all-star Hollywood cast looks to open in about 3,750 theaters. Likewise opening wide next week is the re-release of Avatar. The $2.8 billion worldwide phenomenon re-enters movie houses next week in a projected 1,800 locations.
