Limited and VOD Releases: Can an Indian Film Find Mainstream Appeal?

January 26th, 2018

Padmavati

Padmavati is the biggest release of the week and unlike most Indian films, it is earning a lot of buzz. It could be a crossover hit. There are also a couple of films earning 100% positive reviews: the Chinese Indie animated film, Have a Nice Day, as well as Kickboxer: Retaliation. I don’t think the latter’s reviews will remain 100% positive for too much longer. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Oh No, You have to Go to Limited Releases!

October 14th, 2016

Miss Hokusai

There are a ton of limited releases earning great reviews this week. Perhaps too many of them. Some, like Shin Godzilla, have more popular appeal, but many of them, like Tower, are aiming for Oscar Glory. More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Best Man Down

January 19th, 2014

Best Man Down opened in the heart of Awards Season, but it wasn't aiming for Oscars. It's simply an Indie Dramedy that got lost in the crowd, in part due to its release date, but also in part due to its reviews. Does it deserve to find an audience in limited release? Or would this film have faded away no matter when it debuted? More...

Limited Releases: Lying about Limited Releases

November 8th, 2013

Best Man Down poster

There are quite a few limited releases on this week's list, including several that have earned more pre-release buzz that most limited releases earn. However, many of these films' reviews are good, but not great. The Book Thief is one such film, but it could still find an audience in limited release, although its plans to expand wide are very unlikely to happen. How I Live Now and Great Expectations are in similar positions. More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Stand Up Guys

May 20th, 2013

Stand Up Guys has a very impressive cast with three Oscar winners in the three lead roles. It also opened with an Oscar-qualifying run; however, outside of a Golden Globe nomination for best original song, it was passed over by Awards Season voters. When it opened in limited release, it debuted in several hundred theaters, but barely topped the Mendoza Line on the per theater chart, while it disappeared as quickly as that opening would suggest. Will it find success on the home market? Or will it struggle there like it did in limited release and during Awards Season? More...
