2018 - Awards Season: Golden Globes - Nominations

December 6, 2018

Vice

The Golden Globes nominations are the second major Awards Season set to come out. It is still very early in the year and the predictive value of the Golden Globes is a little suspect, but there are still some things to learn here. For example Vice led the way with six nominations, so its Oscar chances have gone up, but don’t expect it to lead the way when the Oscars nominations are announced.

The categories and nominees are...

BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

BEST MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

Notes and Reactions...

  • Vice led the way here with six nominations, but three films were right behind with five nods a piece: The Favourite, Green Book, and A Star Is Born. I suspect those three will have better success with the Oscars.
  • Vice helped Annapurna earn 10 nominations, which is great news, as the studio has had some box office misses that hurt its future. All three of their upcoming releases earned at least one nomination, so hopefully that will boost their box office chances.
  • Fox Searchlight also earned 10 nominations, while Disney was right behind with 9.
  • Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born were both nominated for Drama and not Comedy / Musical. I find that odd.
  • Bohemian Rhapsody is arguably the worse of the Best Drama and Best Comedy / Musical nominees. I think it is thriving thanks to a stellar soundtrack.
  • Amazingly, all five nominations for Animated Film are worthy of the nominations. I don’t have a favorite and I will be happy no matter which one wins.
  • I’m really happy that Elsie Fisher earned a nomination for Eighth Grade. Too often, Awards Season voters tend to skip younger performers because they will have a long career and more chances in the future.
  • Roma’s a lock for Best Foreign-Language Golden Globe, right? It earned two more nominations, while none of the other nominees in this category earned a single other nomination.
  • I’m very happy Black Panther picked up three nominations, but how did they snub Ryan Coogler for Best Director?
  • Likewise, The Favourite earned five nominations, but its director, Yorgos Lanthimos, was snubbed.
  • At least Spike Lee earned a nomination for BlacKkKlansman. Hopefully this means he will get his long overdue Best Director Oscar nod.
  • Widows was completely shut out, which is a shock.
