Holiday theater counts: Wonka staves off a rush of newcomers heading into the Christmas weekend

December 21st, 2023

Wonka

As the lone wide release to enter theaters last week, Wonka dominated both the domestic and international box office, scoring a solid $39 million from North American showings, while adding just over $54 million to its previous overseas total of $59 million. Even as the film loses 26 locations this week, it is still available in 3,665 cinemas, which tops our list this week. The film logged in over $14 million in its latest weekend, good enough for second place, in between the two newcomers, RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCÉ, and Godzilla Minus One, which earned $21.8 million and $11.42 million respectively. 2022/23 market forecast: highly seasonal with a chance of Summer hits

December 8th, 2022

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Today we’re publishing our first full-year prediction for 2023, and our final analysis for 2022. The good news is that our model thinks the theatrical market will grow in 2023 by about 10% from this year. The bad news is that it will still fall well short of pre-pandemic numbers, in large part due to a lack of films being released outside of a brief Summer season.

Subscribe to our Bankability and Box Office report for full details, or read on for an overview of what our model thinks of the next 12 months in movie theaters… More...

The sequel surpassed $400 million globally on Wednesday, with $213 million coming from North American viewings, while $187 million arrived from overseas markets. Wakanda Forever won’t be challenged this week at the box office, but two new wide releases make their arrival to cinemas, and She Said, and The Menu, should provide options for nearly every taste. 2018 - Awards Season: BAFTA - Nominations

January 12th, 2019

The Favorite

The BAFTA nominations were announced and The Favorite led the way with 12 nominations. Sometimes the BAFTAs are a really good indicator for who will do well on Oscar night. Other times their bias to British films is too much. I think this year will be an example of the latter and I don't think The Favourite is suddenly an Oscar favorite. That said, there’s still some things you can learn here. More...

2018 - Awards Season: Golden Globes - Nominations

December 6th, 2018

Vice

The Golden Globes nominations are the second major Awards Season set to come out. It is still very early in the year and the predictive value of the Golden Globes is a little suspect, but there are still some things to learn here. For example Vice led the way with six nominations, so its Oscar chances have gone up, but don’t expect it to lead the way when the Oscars nominations are announced. More...

Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Eighth Grade

October 7th, 2018

Eighth Grade opened with stellar reviews and I even heard Oscar talk for its star, Elsie Fisher. This does have the negative side effect of increasing expectations. Can it live up to those expectations? And is the DVD / Blu-ray worth picking up? More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Will Any Release Solve the Box Office Puzzle?

July 27th, 2018

Puzzle

We are entering the dog days of summer, which means there are not a lot of limited releases. It’s too late to get a boost from summer vacations while trying to expand, but it is way too early for Awards Season buzz. There are some films that could find smaller audiences in theaters, like Scarred Hearts or Puzzle, but I don’t expect any of them to earn any real measure of mainstream success. More...

2017 Awards Season: Oscars Nominations: Final Look

March 4th, 2018

The Shape of Water

It’s Oscar night and we will be live blogging the show. Before that, let’s take a last look at the nominations with a few annotations. Nominees in Italics are those that have received the most votes from our readers so far in our Oscar contest (which is open to new entries until noon, Pacific, today—enter now!). Bold films are those films I think will win. Meanwhile, those that are Underlined are those I want to win. Not all categories have underlined nominees, because not all categories have someone I’m cheering for, or because there are two nominees I couldn’t pick between. For example, I will be happy no matter who wins Best Supporting Actress. One last note: The contest is still going and the leading for Best Picture Switched from The Shape of Water to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri to tied over the time I was writing this story. This is the closest I’ve ever seen it. Guessing the best picture correctly will go a long way to winning. More...

2017 Awards Season: Independent Spirit Awards Winners

March 3rd, 2018

2017 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Leading Actor

February 22nd, 2018

Darkest Hour

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and who should just feel honored to be nominated. This week we look at the four acting categories, continuing with Best Lead Actor. As with every other acting category, there is an overwhelming favorite. More...

2017 Awards Season: Oscars Nominations

January 23rd, 2018

The Shape of Water

The Oscar nominations were announced starting at just after 5 am Pacific time. They do this every year and no one has been able to adequately explain why to me. At least there were some interesting results this year. The Shape of Water led the way with 13 nominations, which is one below the current record and nearly as many as the next two films combined. Overall, there were seventeen films that earned two or more nominations. More...

2017 Awards Season: BAFTA Nominations

January 11th, 2018

The Shape of Water

The BAFTA nominations were announced and this time The Shape of Water led the way with 12 nominations. The same films appear on many of the lists of nominees, but so far no one film has come to dominate the list. This makes it interesting, to say the least. There’s a good chance no one film will win the majority of prestige awards and that multiple films will have lots of reason to celebrate on February 18th when the awards are handed out. More...

2017 Awards Season: SAG Nominations

December 13th, 2017

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

The Screen Actors Guild were the third group to announce their nominations for this awards season. So far there have been three different films earning the most nominations. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri picked up four nominations, which is extra impressive, as there are only six theatrical categories. More...

2017 - Awards Season: Golden Globes - Nominations

December 11th, 2017

The Shape of Water

The Golden Globes nominations are the second major Awards Season set to come out. Sort of. (WGA announced the nominations for TV, radio, etc., but not their theatrical nods.) It is still very early in the year, so it is hard to say if there are any real snubs, or if there are any real favorites. The Shape of Water led the way with seven nominations, while The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri were right behind with six a piece. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Final Releases

August 14th, 2015

Final Girl

It is both a very busy week with nearly a dozen releases on this week's list and a disappointing one. The slate of new releases is really weak, with only Mistress America having a decent shot at box office success. There are a couple of other releases that have the reviews to do well, but are playing on VOD. Of these, People Places Things is my choice for Video on Demand Pick of the Week, although I'm hoping Final Girl is better than its early reviews would indicate. More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Interstellar

March 30th, 2015
