Theater counts: Creed III punches its way into 4,007 theaters

The third installment of the Creed franchise, and ninth overall film in the Rocky film series, Creed III enters the fray this week as the widest release, and the only film showing in over 4,000 locations. 4,007 of them, to be precise. The sports drama, starring Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, is also Jordan’s directorial debut. The opening count is a Rocky franchise record.

Also opening in wide release is the action-comedy Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre. Starting out in 2,168 locations, the movie features an all-star ensemble cast including Jason Statham, Hugh Grant, Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Josh Hartnett and Bugzy Malone. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the movie follows super spy Orson Fortune (played by Statham) and his team of top operatives as they recruit Hollywood’s biggest movie star to help them on an undercover mission to stop a billionaire arms broker (played by Grant) from selling a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order.

Also making its North American debut is the latest from Crunchyroll in the anime action-adventure Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Swordsmith Village. Estimated to arrive in about 2,000 venues, the newest Demon Slayer is a feature length cut of episodes 10 and 11 of the Entertainment District Arc and the extended Episode 1 of the upcoming Swordsmith Village Arc.

Rounding out the top five this week is the current top movie of the week, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which slips into second as it drops to 3,825 locations. The third- and fourth-widest releases both come from Universal Pictures with last week’s newcomer Cocaine Bear and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, clocking in with 3,570 and 2,582 cinemas respectively. Lastly, Jesus Revolution slides into the fifth slot, showing in 2,575 theaters.

Looking ahead to next week we see three new wide releases make their theatrical debuts. Arriving in 3,500 locations, the largest of them is the most recent of another blockbuster franchise film as Scream VI makes its way to the big screen. Expected to launch in about 3,200 locations is the Adam Driver-led 65. Lastly, Woody Harrelson’s latest, Champions is projected to begin its run in 3,000 cinemas.
