Weekend predictions: John Wick shooting for $75 million plus this weekend

March 24th, 2023

John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick: Chapter 4 will continue the remarkable run for the John Wick franchise by earning more on opening weekend than John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum, just as that movie beat the opening weekend of John Wick: Chapter Two, which had a better opening weekend than the original John Wick. It’s a rare franchise that manages to grow business with each new release, and an even rarer one that gets better reviews with each outing. But this is one of them. Exactly how much it’ll make this weekend remains a little uncertain, but things are looking very, very good. More...

Weekend predictions: $40 million on the cards for Creed III

March 3rd, 2023

Creed III

Creed III looks likely to have the best opening weekend for a film in the Creed franchise, which (not adjusted for inflation) would also give it the best opening for a Rocky movie too, at least based on its excellent $5.45 million in previews, and our model’s expectations. Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre looks like an also-ran, unfortunately. Meanwhile, Ant-Man and Cocaine Bear keep things interesting as our model picks apart this weekend’s box office prospects. Weekend predictions: Magic Mike could still win weekend from 1,550 theaters

February 10th, 2023

Magic Mike’s Last Dance

Magic Mike’s Last Dance launches in a modest 1,550 theaters this weekend—Warner Bros. have not announced a precise figure—but that might be enough for it to pull off a win at the box office. Several films are in with a shot though, including Avatar: The Way of Water, the re-release of Titanic, and maybe even 80 for Brady, which has been perched at the top of the daily chart since last Sunday. More...

Weekend predictions: a tight race at the top

February 3rd, 2023

80 for Brady

Three films have a realistic shot at topping the chart this weekend, with Knock at the Cabin and 80 for Brady opening, and Avatar: The Way of Water continuing to be, well, Avatar. With the likes of The Chosen Season 3 Finale ratcheting up good numbers already, we’re in for an interesting weekend at the box office. More...

Weekend predictions: will Avatar get an Oscar boost? Can Infinity Pool or Left Behind break through?

January 27th, 2023

Infinity Pool

The box office performance of Avatar: The Way of Water certainly won’t be harmed this weekend by its 4 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture). How much it will help is the pertinent question for our weekend predictions. It’s the only film from last weekend’s top 10 that looks likely to get a bump from the nominations. One film that wasn’t in the top 10 last weekend could be revived by its Oscar noms: The Fabelmans will add a thousand theaters and try to ride its seven nominations to the best weekend of its run so far. Other Oscar hopefuls expanding this weekend include The Banshees of Inisherin (back in 1,205 theaters), Women Talking (adding 553 locations to play in 707 theaters), Elvis (rereleased in 841 theaters), and Tár, which expands from 106 to 537 movie theaters. Going up against all that are three new releases: Infinity Pool, Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist, and Fear. That’s a lot of competition in the lower reaches of the top 10, but Avatar is in little danger of losing its top spot. More...

Weekend predictions: Avatar should keep Plane grounded this weekend

January 13th, 2023

Plane

Avatar: The Way of Water will get competition from no less than five films that can claim to be opening or expanding wide this weekend. The most serious threat to its box office dominance comes from Plane, an action thriller starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter. But in many ways Avatar is continuing to compete against its predecessor for box office history. This looks like another weekend that it will win with ease against more mortal competition. More...

Weekend predictions: Avatar headed for the top again

January 6th, 2023

Avatar: The Way of Water

Avatar: The Way of Water will top the box office chart again this weekend, as its seemingly unstoppable run continues into the New Year. The big question is when it will start losing momentum, and this weekend is the first big test it has faced, partly because M3GAN is looking to get 2023 off to a good start. Here are our model’s predictions going into the weekend… More...

Weekend predictions: $61.5 million is the target for Avatar over the Holiday weekend

December 23rd, 2022

Avatar: The Way of Water

A bevy of new films arrives in theaters for Christmas, but none are expected to put pressure on Avatar: The Way of Water over the weekend. Here are our (abbreviated) predictions for the weekend… More...

Weekend predictions: Avatar eyeing $170-million opening

December 16th, 2022

Avatar: The Way of Water

Avatar: The Way of Water is finally here. James Cameron’s epic is expected to dominate at the box office well into the New Year and rack up hundreds of millions of dollars domestically (not to mention potentially billions worldwide) in the process. Exactly how many hundreds is the question, of course. Expectations for its opening weekend have been hovering around $150 million for quite a while, and ticked a little higher in the lead up to its release. Our final analysis points to around $170 million. But, as I’ll explain, that comes with a lot of caveats. More...

Weekend predictions: ’tis the weekend before Avatar, and nothing is stirring

December 9th, 2022

Violent Night

With holiday shopping in full swing, and Avatar: The Way of Water arriving next week, movie theaters will be very quiet this weekend. Unless something unexpected happens, this will be the second-slowest weekend of the year, behind the weekend of January 28, when Spider-Man: No Way Home recorded its sixth weekend win with a modest $11 million. Black Panther: Wakana Forever is predicted to top the chart for a fifth time this weekend, with our model thinking it’ll earn about $13.5 million. If it can’t top $10 million (which is a possibility), this might prove to be the slowest weekend of the year. More...
