Per Theater Chart: Fade Sharpens into Focus

April 23rd, 2014

Fading Gigolo poster

Fading Gigolo debuted on top of the per theater chart with an average of $36,160 in five theaters. This is the second best per theater average for a 2014 release behind The Grand Budapest Hotel. Granted, it was well behind that film, but still in second place. Also, given the film's reviews, it won't last very long at the box office. The only other film to reach the $10,000 club was Godzilla: The Original Japanese Version, which celebrated its 60th anniversary with $10,903 in one theater. More...

Weekend Estimates: Heaven is for Real Leads Easter Openers

April 20th, 2014

Heaven is for Real poster

Moviegoers are celebrating Easter weekend by turning out in big numbers to see Heaven is for Real. The Christian-themed movie will be the biggest opener this weekend, with a very respectable $21.5 million projected Friday-to-Sunday and a theater average of $8,895. That puts it at nearly twice box office take of the widest opener this weekend, Transcendence, which is set for a very disappointing $11.15 million debut. Also opening this weekend, and similarly posting mediocre numbers is A Haunted House 2, with a projected $9.1 million from 2,310 theaters. But, with a production budget reported at $4 million, compared to $100 million for Transcendence, the horror spoof shouldn't have a hard time earning money. More...

Limited Releases: Fading Chances

April 18th, 2014

Trailer Park Boys 3: Don't Legalize It poster

It is a busy week for limited releases, but not a good week. Arguably the best film is Gojira, which is getting a re-release for its 60th anniversary. As for new films, The Final Member and Gabrielle are earning the best reviews. However, I'm most interested in seeing Trailer Park Boys: Don't Legalize It. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 24th, 2012

January 24th, 2012

There are three first run releases of note this week, including an Awards Season player, 50/50; the latest installment in a perennial horror franchise, Paranormal Activity 3; and big budget family film, Real Steel. Of those three, 50/50 is the best and a contender for Pick of the Week. Other contenders include Godzilla: The Criterion Collection on Blu-ray and Wings on Blu-ray. However, I'm going with a late arrival: Moneyball on Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack. More...

Per Theatre Average takes a Coffee Break

May 19th, 2004

While the overall box office hasn't caught on fire since the beginning of May, the per theatre average charts have seen a much needed boost. This week another four movies were able to earn more than $10,000 per theatre lead by the debut of Coffee and Cigarettes with an impressive average of $19,832 in 5 theatres. Next on the list was the overall box office leader Troy, which was well back with $13,739. Perhaps more impressive is the sophomore stint of Godzilla: The Original Japanese Version; despite doubling its theatre count it was able to maintain a large portion of its average finishing at $12,176. Rounding out our quartet of $10,000 films is the comedy / social commentary film A Day Without A Mexican, which earned over $600,000 in 56 theatres throughout Southern California for an average of $11,071. The debuts of Van Helsing with $14,475 per theatre and Super Size Me with $12,601 also placed high on the list. And in its ninth weekend of release Games People Play: New York managed an unbelievable $14,388 in its lone theatre. More...
