Synopsis
Arielle is a down on her luck dreamer who longs for popularity. Dean is an ex-con working for his abusive father. The two have an instant connection, and after the accidental death of Dean’s father, are forced on the run. In order to sustain their trip, the two are relegated to robbing gas stations and small shops. In an attempt to gain social media clout, Arielle livestreams their robberies. The two become a modern day viral Bonnie & Clyde steam-rolling towards a tragic ending.

Normally this time of year is a transitional period, as the flood of TV on DVD releases begins to give way to the soon-to-be flood of summer blockbusters. However, the pandemic means there are no summer blockbusters coming out this week, or next week. Or next month. Or the month after that. There are still a couple of bigger TV-on-DVD releases, including The Flash, but the biggest recent theatrical releases hardly made an impact. The best release on this week’s list is Yes, God, Yes, but Amazon has it currently unavailable, so grab it from Target instead.

According to reports by Deadline, Jurassic Park led the way on the weekend box office chart, just ahead of Jaws at $517,600 to $516,300. In fact, much of the top ten were catalog titles. A few more recent releases did generate some business though.

There’s an eclectic mix of limited and virtual releases this week with more than a few that are earning critical praise. Marona’s Fantastic Tale is an animated film that packs an emotional punch and GKIDS has a proven track record when it comes to quality. Hill of Freedom is a South Korean romantic drama with an excellent hook and reviews to match. Even some of the smaller films on the main list, like The Short History of the Long Road, look intriguing.
