2015 - Awards Season: BAFTA - Nominations

January 9, 2016

Bridge of Spies

The BAFTA nominations were announced and you can read them on their site... in alphabetical order. Alphabetical order is very useful in most circumstances, but not here. On the other hand, the nominees within each category are not presented in alphabetical order. ... Are the BAFTAs trolling us? As for the actual nominees, the big winners here are Bridge of Spies and Carol, both of which earned nine nominations. For Carol, this is just another impressive score, but this was a pleasant surprise for Bridge of Spies.

Notes and Reactions...

  • The Revenant was second best in terms of total nominations with eight of them. This includes Leonardo DiCaprio, who is widely expected to win the Oscar this year. This is just more evidence that this will happen.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road grabbed seven nods, while The Martian (six nominations); Ex Machina (five); and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (four) were other Sci-fi films to earn multiple nominations.
  • Among the categories Ex Machina is represented are Best British Film and Best Film by a British Newcomer. I think it has those two awards locked up.
  • Speaking of Ex Machina, Alicia Vikander picked up two nominations again, once for the Sci-fi film and once for The Danish Girl.
  • Inside Out should have no trouble winning for Best Feature-Length Animated Film and I would like to see it win for Original Screenplay.
  • On the other hand, I'm sure Minions wasn't one of the three best Animated films to come out this year.
  • Are people tired of me ranting about Lily Tomlin being snubbed? Tough.
