Theater Averages: Conjuring Comes Out on Top, but De Palma is De Lightful

June 15, 2016

De-Palma

There were only two films in the $10,000 club on the theater average chart. This includes the overall number one film, The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, which opened with an average of $12,087. The only other film in the $10,000 club was De Palma, which earned an average of $10,118 in three theaters.

There was a wide range in the averages for the rest of the new limited releases, with some coming close to $10,000 and others failing to reach $1,000. The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble was on the high end with an average of $8,204 in three theaters. Genius earned an average of $6,142 while playing in 16 theaters. Diary of a Chambermaid opened in 2 theaters earning an average of $5,534. Meanwhile, From Afar and Germans and Jews were right behind with $5,136 and $5,024 respectively, both in 1 theater. Call Her Applebroog was well back with $2,559, also in one theater. Te3n opened in over 100 theaters earning an average of $2,481.

We are not done with new limited releases, but the rest all missed the Mendoza Line ($2,000 per theater), some by a lot. Tikkun and Therapy For A Vampire were neck-and-neck with averages $1,798 and $1,681. Both movies were playing in two theaters each. Blackway earned an average of $1,496 in 11 theaters. Meanwhile, Puerto Ricans in Paris debuted in 41 theaters, which is too many for a limited release. That explains its average of $651. On the other hand, Last Cab to Darwin was only playing in one theater and it only made $620.

This past week also saw milestones reached for many Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Maggie's Plan reached $1 million. Its theater average is barely above $2,000, so it won't expand significantly beyond this point, but it should still get to $2 million shortly and $3 million is possibly within reach.
  • A Beautiful Planet has been very steady for the past few weeks, which is not uncommon for an IMAX edutainment film. This helped it hit $2 million just before the weekend. Because of its nature, it could still be in theaters in a couple of years.
  • The Man Who Knew Infinity made it to $3 million just before the weekend. $4 million is likely out of reach.
  • The Lobster got all the way to $5 million over the weekend. On the other hand, it is going to start losing theaters rather quickly, so $10 million likely is out of range.
