International Box Office: Trek Makes Return Trip to International Chart with $37.0 million

Star Trek Beyond climbed into first place for the first time in its run with $37.0 million in 40 markets for totals of $131.1 million internationally and $285.4 million worldwide. The film earned first place in China with a total opening of $30.92 million, including previews. It was not as strong in Brazil, where it earned $1.6 million on 479 screens. The film is doing well enough that it should break even, eventually, but it is not a truly monster hit.
The Secret Life of Pets climbed into second place with $17.3 million on 7,791 screens in 52 markets for totals of $403 million internationally and $761.5 million worldwide. The film’s biggest opening was in Singapore, where it made $1.3 million on 30 screens. Its biggest market overall was Brazil, where it made $3.6 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $9.3 million. Meanwhile, Russia was close behind with $3.12 million on 1,307 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $30.40 million. The film only has two major market openings left, Australia this weekend and Italy next month, so it will slide out of the top five shortly.
Jason Bourne fell to third place with $12.0 million on 9,567 screens in 62 markets for totals of $223 million internationally and $378 million worldwide. It is now the biggest international hit in the franchise. New openings this week were led by a second place debut in Russia with $2.20 million on 994 screens, while it earned third place in Italy with $1.19 million. It has yet to open in Japan, it’s last market, but doesn’t open there until October.
Suicide Squad remained in fourth place with $11.8 million in 65 markets over the weekend for totals of $375.5 million internationally and $672.8 million worldwide.
Ice Age: Collision Course rounded out the top five with $8.2 million in 30 markets for totals of $326.6 million internationally and $389.2 million worldwide. It fell 72% in China to $6.45 million over the weekend for a 13-day total of $59.57 million.
Finding Dory rose to seventh place $6.3 million in 20 markets for totals of $461.4 million internationally and $943.4 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings, but it did debut in Greece and Turkey. We don’t have the Greek numbers, but it did earn first place in Turkey with $466,000 on 285 screens. The film’s legs have been so strong the last few weeks that even if it performs on the low end of expectations in its last two markets, Italy and Germany, it should still be enough to crack $1 billion worldwide.
