Weekend Wrap-Up: Madea puts out Inferno’s Fire earning $17.22 million

November 1, 2016

Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween

Halloween helped boost Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween’s numbers over the weekend allowing it to earn first place with $17.22 million. This was much better than the $14.86 million Inferno opened with. While Halloween didn’t happen until Monday, the holiday still had a negative effect on the box office, as it fell 29% to just $88 million. That’s worse than anticipated. Compared to the same weekend last year, 2016 was better by 17%, but it’s hard to spin this as a real victory. Year-to-date, 2016’s lead over 2015 barely budged at $9.06 billion to $8.69 billion. That said, if 2016 can just maintain this lead till Rogue One debuts, then we should have at least some growth at the end of the year.

Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween remained in first place with $17.22 million. This is just a 40% drop-off from its opening weekend, which is amazing compared to most films in the Madea franchise. Even A Madea Christmas fell 48% and it opened during Christmas, which tends to extend a film’s legs. Boo! is already the fourth biggest hit in the franchise with $52.56 million after just ten days of release and it will reach second place by this time next week. Topping Madea Goes to Jail will prove difficult.

Inferno only managed $14.86 million during its opening weekend, which is terrible for a film that cost $75 million to make. Worse still, the reviews will likely hurt its word-of-mouth damaging its legs. (The competition next week won’t help.) On the positive side, the film’s international numbers are looking a lot better and it could break even without even looking at the domestic figures. If this franchise does continue, it might not even get a wide release here.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back fell to third place with $9.55 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of $39.68 million. There’s good news, as the $96 million production budget that we reported on turns out to be the combined budget. A $60 million production budget still isn’t cheap, but the film now at least has a shot at breaking even during its initial push into the home market, assuming it does as well internationally as it does domestically, relatively speaking. It’s too soon to tell if that will happen.

The Accountant held on better than expected with $8.48 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $61.26 million. The film cost approximately $80 million to make and distribute and there is a slim chance it will top that figure domestically. Unless it struggles internationally, it will break even sometime in its home market run.

Ouija: Origin of Evil was within a rounding error of expectations earning $7.11 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $24.68 million. It isn’t a hit, but thanks to its small production budget, it could break even on the home market.

Looking at the sophomore class, we find Keeping Up with the Joneses in eighth place with $3.39 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of $10.79 million. It will lose a huge chunk of its theaters this Friday. I’m Not Ashamed fell 51% to just $451,000 over the weekend for a running tally of $1.64 million. By this time next week, most moviegoers won’t remember it was ever in theaters.
