Weekend Wrap-Up: Split Scores Another Touchdown with $14.42 million

February 7, 2017

Split

As expected, Split earned first place over the weekend with $14.42 million. That’s not bad for Super Bowl weekend. In fact, the overall depth was better than expected, not that you could tell from the week-over-week decline. The overall box office fell 31% to just $98 million. However, this was still 2.5% better than the same weekend last year. That’s a surprise victory. Granted, 2017 is still behind 2016 by 5.1% at $1.06 billion to $1.12 billion, but every little victory helps.

Split earned $14.42 million over the weekend for a total of $98.54 million after three weeks of release. It has benefited from some really weak competition, but its reviews have also helped. It will get to $100 million shortly, but there is a lot more competition this weekend, so it will quickly fall out of the top five.

Rings managed $13.00 million over the weekend, which is worse than the first film managed back in 2002. This film won’t have nearly as long legs, thanks to the sequel effect and its word-of-mouth. Its reviews are a mere 7% positive, while it only got a C minus from CinemaScore. With three wide releases opening on Friday and some films below it earning strong legs, I give it a less than 50% chance of being in the top five next week.

A Dog’s Purpose managed third place with $10.51 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $32.61 million. It was only down 42%, which is a clear sign the film is connecting with families. It will be a solid midlevel hit in theaters and likely a bigger hit on the home market.

Hidden Figures was right behind with $10.19 million over the weekend for a running tally of $119.49 million. If the film hasn’t earned a profit yet, it will shortly.

La La Land rounded out the top five with $7.37 million over the weekend for a total of $118.23 million. It has fallen behind Hidden Figures on the yearly chart, but an Oscar bounce should help it switch places again.

The Space Between Us was an utter bomb earning ninth place with $3.78 million, putting it well below the Mendoza Line. Its reviews suggest short legs, while theater owners won’t be willing to keep this movie any longer than they are contractually obligated to.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter just missed the top five with $4.70 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of $22.05 million. It fell 65%, so it likely won’t get to $30 million and will need strong international numbers to break even. Gold would need a minor miracle to break even at this point. It only managed 14th place with $1.38 million over the weekend for a total of $6.15 million after two weeks of release. It will see its theater count slashed on Friday.
