Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

For the third weekend in a row, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 led the international box office chart, earning $52.2 million in 56 markets for totals of $384.4 million internationally and $632.8 million worldwide. This pushes it into seventh place on the MCU chart. The film opened in second place in Japan, where it pulled in $3.0 million, which is 15% better than the original Guardians of the Galaxy did. On the downside, this is the film’s last market to open in, so it will be coasting on holdovers from now on. Speaking of holdovers, the film’s biggest market is China, where it added $15.16 million over the weekend for a total of $80.56 million. This is the film’s biggest single market and it could hit $100 million there shortly.

Alien: Covenant got off to its international start earning second place with $42.0 million in 34 markets. The film’s biggest single market was South Korea, where it earned first place with $3.99 million on 836 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.12 million. It also earned first place in the U.K. with $6.71 million in 626 theaters. This is a mixed result when compared to Prometheusinternational numbers. Covenant did cost a little bit less to make than its predecessor, so it is an acceptable start.

Dangal entered the top five thanks to a monster second weekend in China. The film earned $33.25 million in that market over the weekend for a two-week total of $60.46 million. This nearly matches the $60.5 million the film earned in its native India. Dangal will become the first Indian film to not have India as its single biggest market.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword opened in fourth place with $29.1 million in 51 markets. This is better than its debut here, but not by enough to make a real dent in its $175 million production budget. The film opened in third place in China with $5.26 million, while it topped the chart in Russia with $5.18 million.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is the second Indian film in the top five earning $15.5 million in 8 markets for totals of $165.11 million internationally and $184.10 million worldwide. It is already the biggest Bollywood film of all-time and could hit $200 million worldwide shortly.
