International Box Office: Pirates Sail International Waters with $208.4 million

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales dominated the international box office earning five times more than the rest of the top five combined. The film pulled in $208.4 million in 54 markets and had $271.4 million worldwide by the end of its first weekend. Its biggest single market was China, where it earned $68.55 million over the weekend. This is bigger than its domestic opening. While this is impressive, it is only the third biggest opening in China for a Disney film, behind Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War. On the other hand, the film had a big opening in Russia with $19.10 million, which is the biggest opening weekend in that market of all time. However, it wasn’t all good news, as the only market left to open in is Japan, so it will have to rely on long legs to continue its run.

Dangal was well behind with $11.42 million over the weekend for totals of $211.86 million internationally and $224.25 million worldwide. It is only the second Indian film to reach the $200 million mark worldwide, behind Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.

Alien: Covenant slipped to third third place with $10.8 million in 77 markets for totals of $101.0 million internationally and $158.4 million worldwide. I don’t see how this will be enough to justify another installment in the franchise.

King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword remained in fourth place with $10.0 million in 64 markets for totals of $85.2 million internationally and $119.2 million worldwide. This is simply not enough for a movie that cost $175 million to make.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 rounded out the top five with $8.6 million in 56 markets for totals of $450.1 million internationally and $784.3 million worldwide. As already stated, the film has surpassed the original Guardians of the Galaxy domestically, internationally, and worldwide. Meanwhile, the film is nearly at $100 million in China with a running tally of $98.3 million at the end of the weekend.

There was a tight race for number one on the 2017 Worldwide Chart, but I think it is safe to call the race over for now. Beauty And The Beast’s lead over The Fate Of The Furious seemed in danger, at least a little bit, but this weekend, Beauty And The Beast actually topped The Fate Of The Furious $3.8 million to $3.3 million. Since neither film has any more markets left to open in, and Beauty And The Beast has shown the better legs in the few markets they are still playing in, it will remain on top for now. That said, The Fate Of The Furious hit $1 billion internationally on Sunday, so they do have reason to celebrate.
