Friday Estimates: The DCEU has $38.85 million Reasons to Feel Wonderful

June 3, 2017

Wonder Woman

As expected, Wonder Woman led the way on Friday; however, its box office was a little lower than I would have liked with $38.85 million. (I was expecting $42 million on Friday.) This still gives the film a slim shot at $100 million, although it will likely fall a little short. Fortunately, there are some positive signs we should focus on, including the reviews, which ticked up a point to 94% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, the film earned a solid A from CinemaScore, which should also help its legs. It could still hit $100 million, if it does exceptionally well during matinees on Saturday. We will know this time tomorrow when the weekend estimates are released.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie didn’t live up to expectations, with $8 million on Friday putting it on pace for $25 million over the weekend. This is still a good result for second-tier digitally-animated release, but $100 million could be out of reach. Furthermore, while its reviews are overwhelmingly positive, it only managed a B plus from CinemaScore. Family films rarely earn less than a A, as only the target audience heads out to theaters opening day. This could negatively affect its legs, but it is a little too early to make predictions there.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales earned $6.27 million on Friday, which was 73% lower than its opening Friday. This is a very sharp decline, but on the positive side, it was no worse than anticipated, so it should earn $21 million over the weekend.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 also did as well as expected with $2.67 million on Friday en route to a $10 million weekend. The film will reach $350 million on Saturday.

Baywatch was right behind with $2.63 million, which is better than expected. A $10 million sophomore stint could mean it will match its $60 million production budget domestically, but unless it is a surprise hit internationally, this will just save face and there will be no franchise.
