Weekend Theater Counts: Cars 3 Parks in 4,256 Theaters This Weekend

Cars 3 will open in a franchise-best 4,256 theaters this weekend, making it the fourth-widest release of 2017 so far behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (4,347), The Fate of the Furious (4,310), and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (4,276). Cars 2 debuted in 4,115 theater in 2011, and earned $66.1 million on opening weekend. We’re expecting the latest installment to fall short of that, but not by much.
Three other films open wide this weekend. Rough Night will play in 3,162 locations, and hopes to reach a broad audience. Biopic All Eyez on Me is going for a more targeted 2,471 movie houses. 47 Meters Down will open in 2,270 theaters, according to ESMP. Also opening nationwide is The Book of Henry, in 579 venues for Universal.
Looking ahead to next weekend, Transformers: The Last Knight will play in about 3,900, as Paramount tries to break its losing streak at the box office.
