Home Market Releases for June 20th, 2017

GLOW

Summer time is usually the worst time of year on the home market and that is certainly the case this week. The biggest release of the week is Life, which only made $30 million at the box office. As for the best new release on this week’s list... I’m going to have to go with GLOW: Season One, which hits Netflix on Friday.

The Big O - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
An Anime that takes place in a city where everyone has lost their memory. It focuses on someone who works as a negotiator and who operates a giant robot called The Big O. The reviews on My Anime List are good and it is selling really well, but I have no idea what the show is like.

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This film is among the best and best known films from director Dario Argento, and is for fans of Giallo or fans of horror in general. This 2-disc special edition has a lot of new extras, including an audio commentary track, video essay on the genre, interview, etc. If you like the genre, it is a must have and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Dragon Ball Z Kai: Final Chapters, Part Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the longest running Anime programs of all time and one of the most popular in the west. It has run way too long for me to keep up.

Everybody Loves Somebody - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A Mexican romantic comedy that earned amazing reviews, but struggled in limited release and it is only getting a DVD release. If it had a Blu-ray release, it could have been a serious contender for Pick of the Week during the average week. This week, it is a slow enough week that its DVD is still a contender.

GLOW

GLOW: Season 1 - Watch on Netflix: Video on Demand
I watched G.L.O.W. when it first came out on TV and I loved the documentary when it came out a few years ago. Does the new Netflix series live up to the show? Is it worth checking out if you haven’t seen the original show? Read our review to find out.

Joe Versus the Volcano - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
You want to know how slow this week is. This release, which would normally be a secondary Blu-ray release, is fighting for a spot in the top five best-selling new releases of the week. It’s shovelware. The only two extras on the Blu-ray, a behind-the-scenes featurette and a music video, were both on the DVD release. On the other hand, its reviews are good, so it is worth checking out.

Life - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I was hoping to get a screener for this Sci-fi horror movie, but that’s not going to happen. The reviews are good, but not great, while it really struggled in theaters. The only extras are a trio of relatively short making of featurettes, some in character astronaut diaries, and finally some deleted scenes. It is worth checking out, but I think a rental will be enough for most. That is, unless you are a particular fan of this genre.

Logan - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I named this movie Pick of the Week a few weeks ago when it came out on VOD. However, the DVD arrived late, so I was only able to get to it this week. Was it worth the wait? Check out our review for my opinion.

One Piece: Season Nine, Voyage One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
There has been nearly 800 episodes of this show released. If you watched every episode back-to-back without interruptions, it would still take nearly two full weeks to watch. There is a reason the show has lasted this long, but if you haven’t been watching it from the start, the thought of starting now and catching up is just daunting.

Sailor Moon S, Part 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The most famous example of the Magic Genre genre of Anime. It has lasted decades and there is a huge fanbase. It is one of the few Anime titles that can regularly sell well enough to be featured on this list.

This Beautiful Fantastic - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Jessica Brown Findlay stars as a woman who wants to be an author of children books. The reviews are good, but not great. It is worth checking out, but I’m not sure it is worth picking up or just a rental.

Wilson - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film has a great cast, but it earned mixed reviews and bombed in theaters. Extras on the DVD / Blu-ray include a trio of featurettes and some deleted scenes, so even if you are interested in it, it is just a rental.

Workaholics: The Final Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I never got into this show, so I don’t know if this last season was as good as the previous ones. However, the user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes plummeted the last season.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
No 3D releases this week, and ...

4K Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Life - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Only one 4K release this week. It is the biggest new release of the week, but that says more about how slow the week is than how big this film was.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Josie & the Pussycats - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Tales From the Crypt - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Under the Dome - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Workaholics - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Tales From the Crypt is the only Megaset that I’m interested in. Under the Dome started out really well, but it fell apart halfway through the first season.
