Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets earned first place on the international chart with $32.78 million in 32 countries for totals of $124.12 million internationally and $163.81 million worldwide. The film earned first place in China with $28.88 million over the weekend for a total of $29.24 million. The film has yet to open in South Korea and Italy so it will likely top its production budget worldwide; that’s nowhere near enough to break even, but if it can get to $200 million worldwide, then it can at least safe face.

Annabelle: Creation was pushed into second place with $22.0 million in 61 markets for totals of $137.2 million internationally and $215.4 million worldwide. The film earned $1.5 million on 310 screens in Germany and an identical amount of $1.5 million on 217 in the Philippines. Meanwhile, it added $2.9 million to its running tally in Mexico, pushing its total in that market to $13.3 million. The film is outperforming the previous installments in the franchise in most markets and could become the biggest hit in the franchise internationally. It might become the biggest film in the franchise worldwide, if it does well in Spain and Japan, it’s last two markets.

Wolf Warriors 2 fell to third place with $17 million in 5 markets for totals of $817 million internationally and $819 million worldwide. This record-breaking hit has yet to find any real traction in any market outside its native China. Speaking of China, the film finally relinquished first place earning $16.44 million over the weekend for a four-week total of $817.25 million.

Baby Driver earned a spot in the top five for the first time during its run earning fourth place with $14.63 million on 15,636 screens in 71 markets for totals of $90.09 million internationally and $193.4 million worldwide. The film’s biggest opening was in China, where it earned fourth place with $9.65 million on 12,500 screens over the weekend and $9.79 million including previews. Its best opening was in Russia, where it earned first place with $2.64 million on 996 screens.

Cars 3 rounded out the top five with $13.4 million in 27 markets for totals of $175.7 million internationally and $324.8 million worldwide. The film debuted in third place in China with a total opening of $10.88 million. This is the third-best three-day opening for a Pixar film in this market and easily the best in the franchise. The film has yet to open in Italy and Germany, but unless it is an unreasonably big hit in those two markets, it will finish way below the average Pixar movie. Fortunately, its merchandising is more than enough to cover its combined production and advertising budgets.
