Limited and VOD Releases: Goon takes on Dolores Huerta

It’s not a good week for limited releases. It is too late for a limited release to take advantage of the summer, while it is still too soon to take advantage of Awards Season buzz. There are some movies that are worth checking out, including the documentary Dolores, but none jump out as having a lot of box office potential. Personally, the film I’m most intereted in seeing is Goon: Last of the Enforcers.

Secondary VOD Releases:
This is a documentary about political activist Dolores Huerta, who helped farm workers unions, but whose contributions have been largely forgotten. There are only nine reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but all nine of them are positive, so fans of the genre should check it out.

In my opinion, the original Goon was the best hockey movie ever made. The sequel is earning 50% positive reviews, as too many critics complain about the number of sports clichés in the movie. That’s disappointing. On the other hand, if you did like the first film, then spending $7 on a VOD rental isn’t a bad deal.
An ensemble comedy about a filmmaker who wants to prove that marriage should be a seven-year contract, with an option to renew. The film has an amazing cast, but the reviews are terrible. This is too bad, because it is written and directed by Lake Bell, who made the terrific In a World..., so I was looking forward to this one.
This film takes place in the 1980s Slovakia and focuses on a new teacher who abuses her power and thanks to her position in the Communist Party, she gets away with it. Its reviews are good enough to thrive in limited release, but as a foreign-language film, it won’t escape the art house circuit.
Video on Demand
Noomi Rapace plays a CIA agent trying to stop a terrorist attack in London. The film has a great cast compared to most limited releases, but its reviews are weak and it is playing on VOD. Its reviews are weak enough that it isn’t even worth spending $6 on a rental.
This film is set in India in 1947, during the countries partitioning. The reviews are good, but not good enough to thrive in limited release. It should do better on the home market.
