International Box Office: Dunkirk Invades China with $30.27 million

Dunkirk

Dunkirk returned to the international top five for the first time in nearly a month with $36.5 million in 60 markets for totals of $280.0 million international and $459.0 million worldwide. Nearly all of this came from its first place opening in China, where it pulled in $29.80 million over the weekend for a four-day opening of $30.27 million. The film also opened in Italy, but had to settle for second place with $3.6 million on 606 screens. Dunkirk wraps up its international run in Japan this weekend and will finish with north of $500 million worldwide. Unless it cost an obscene amount to advertise, this will be enough to ensure profitability by its initial push into the home market.

Annabelle: Creation remained in second place with $15.6 million in 62 markets for totals of $164.4 million internationally and $253.6 million worldwide. The film is going to quickly overtake the original Annabelle and move into third place in the franchise. The film’s biggest new market of the weekend was Argentina, where it earned first place with $2.5 million. This is the biggest all-time opening for a horror movie in that market.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard entered the international top five earning third place with $14.23 million in 27 markets for totals of $42.2 million internationally and $97.4 million worldwide. It topped $100 million worldwide, if you include holiday Monday. The film dominated South Korea with $4.29 million in 482 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.65 million. That’s better than its opening here, given the relative size of the two markets. The film also debuted in Australia with $1.85 million on 313 screens, which is equivalent to about $20 million here, again, given the relative size of the two markets.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets fell from first to fourth place with $11.26 million in 25 markets for totals of $162.20 million internationally and $202.48 million worldwide. The film debuted in third place in South Korea with $1.89 million on 629 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.63 million. The film’s final market is Italy on the 21st of this month and if it does well there, it could reach $200 million internationally. That will be enough to save face, but not enough to break even anytime soon.

Despicable Me 3 earned fifth place with $10.9 million on 5,413 screens in 59 markets for totals of $738.40 million internationally and $996.44 million worldwide. It is about a week away from $1 billion worldwide, which might not be enough to get another direct sequel. The chances of getting a Despicable Me 4 depends on how well Minions 2 does. If Minions 2 does better than the original Minions, then the studio could go with Minions 3 and Minions 4 rather than Despicable Me 4.
