Theater Averages: Victoria and Abdul win by Royal Decree with $39,711

Victoria and Abdul

Victoria and Abdul earned first place on the theater average chart with an average of $39,711 in four theaters. This is an excellent start and the movie has a lot of room to grow. Battle of the Sexes was playing in 21 theaters and earned an average of $24,545. It too has room to expand. It might even expand enough to get some Awards Season buzz. Unrest just managed a spot in the $10,000 club with $10,607 in one theater. That’s great for a documentary.

The were only a couple of new limited release that did okay. Bobbi Jene also did well for a documentary with $7,500, again in one theater. Woodshock did okay earning an average of $4,082 in three theaters. Stronger was the only other film to not miss the Mendoza Line earning an average of $2,808. It was playing in nearly 600 theaters, so that is mitigating circumstances.

Ribbons wasn’t as lucky earning an average of $1,143 in five theaters. The Tiger Hunter only pulled in an average of $942 in 42 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Trip to Spain hit $1 million very early in the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go. It is the weakest installment in The Trip franchise, but $1 million is still good for a limited release.
  • Brad’s Status expanded and that got it to $1 million late in the weekend. It likely won’t get much further, as its theater average is low enough that it likely won’t expand significantly.
  • Stronger opened with more than $1 million. It too won’t get much further, as its theater average is also low enough that it likely won’t expand too much more.
  • Wind River hit $30 million early last week. It’s just one spot away from 50th place on the 2017 domestic chart.
