International Box Office: Coco Catapults into First Place with $69.0 million

December 6, 2017

Coco

Coco climbed into first place with $69.0 million in 33 markets for totals of $171.3 million internationally and $281.4 million worldwide. The film opened in a trio of major markets in Europe, earning first place in all three. France led the way with $5.2 million, $6.4 million including previews, while Spain ($2.8 million) and Germany ($2.0 million) were also strong results. It beat Moana’s opening in all three markets. The film grew 146% during its second weekend in China earning $44.17 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $75.79 million. The film is already the biggest Pixar hit in China and is in third place for Disney animated films, behind Zootopia and Big Hero 6.

Justice League fell 50% to $35.7 million on 20,375 screens in 66 markets for totals of $370.1 million internationally and $567.5 million worldwide. The film needed $750 million worldwide to have any real chance of breaking even, but I’m no longer convinced that will happen. There are some bright spots. For example, the film is close to $100 million in China with $8.58 million on 5,500 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $98.91 million. Additionally, it has done really well in Brazil with $4.1 million on 1,269 screens for a three-week total of $31.2 million. On the other hand, the film only has $20.2 million in the U.K. after three weeks of release, which is roughly equivalent to about $110 million here. That’s terrible for a movie that cost $300 million to make.

Murder on the Orient Express remained in third place with $23.1 million in 68 markets over the weekend for totals of $153.7 million internationally and $237.5 million worldwide. The film had good openings in Italy ($3.8 million) and South Korea ($3.4 million), while it cracked $1 million in both Indonesia ($1.8 million) and Brazil ($1.5 million). The film is guaranteed to hit $250 million worldwide at this pace; in fact, with openings in Japan and France ahead, it is practically guaranteed to hit $300 million worldwide. That would be enough to pay for its production budget, its advertising budget, and likely most of the announced sequel’s production budget.

Daddy’s Home 2 more than doubled its market count, but it was still stuck in fourth place with $15.6 million in 49 markets for totals of $34.0 million internationally and $116.9 million worldwide. The film did have an impressive $5 million opening in Mexico. That’s not far behind the $7 million the first film made in that market, but this is one of the few bright spots for the movie. It should still break even, but I don’t think it has done well enough to stretch the franchise into a trilogy.

Fireworks, Should We See It from the Side or the Bottom? earned $10.63 million over the weekend in China for a total opening in that market of $10.70 million. This was enough for second place there and fifth place internationally. Add in its Japanese box office, and it already has $26.11 million.

Thor: Ragnarok slipped to seventh place, but it did crack $800 million worldwide since this time last week. It earned $6.5 million in 52 markets for totals of $525.0 million internationally and $816.6 million worldwide. It became just the 69th film to reach $800 million worldwide and by the end of the week it had reached 66th place on the all-time chart. The film is still the weakest film in the MCU this year, but it has a small shot at lasting long enough to top Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, and possibly even Spider-Man: Homecoming.
