International Box Office: Coco Collects Another $55.3 million

December 13, 2017

Coco

Coco earned first place for the second time with $55.3 million in 35 markets for totals of $254.0 million internationally and $389.7 million worldwide. Even if we pretended Christmas wasn’t right around the corner and that the film didn’t still have several major markets left to open in, it would still be on track to earn over $500 million worldwide, which is more than enough to cover its entire production budget and likely a sizable chunk of its advertising budget. With Christmas less than two weeks away and international openings in Australia, Italy, Brazil, South Korea, the U.K., and Japan still ahead, there’s a chance this film will finish with $750 million worldwide. That would be more than enough to pay for its combined production budget, meaning it will break even before it reaches the home market. As for this past weekend, the film continued to top the chart in China with $34.80 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $127.98 million.

Paddington 2 rose to second place with $21.50 million in 18 markets for an international total of $70.75 million. Most of its weekend haul came from China, where it earned $15.79 million over the weekend. Most of its total haul has come from the U.K., where it has made $36.33 million, including $3.89 million on 652 screens this past weekend. The original made $56.69 million in its native market, so Paddington 2 will need a monster run during Christmas to catch up.

Murder on the Orient Express remained in third place, again, this time with $20.1 million in 59 markets over the weekend for totals of $182.0 million international and $274.8 million worldwide. Unless the film cost more to advertise than it did to make, it has made enough to break even.

Justice League fell to fourth place with just $15.4 million on 11,478 screens in 66 markets for totals of $401.3 million internationally and $613.4 million worldwide. The film’s legs have been terrible, simply awful. Even after its weaker than expected opening, I still thought $750 million worldwide was a sure thing, but now even $700 million looks out of reach.

Daddy’s Home 2 rounded out the top five with $11.6 million in 59 markets for totals of $51.2 million internationally and $142.3 million worldwide. The original film finished with just over $90 million internationally, which is likely more than this film will earn. It will come close enough to break even on the home market, on the other hand.
