Early Friday Estimates Update: The Last Jedi Tracking Ticks Higher now at North of $100 million Opening Day

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Disney is really on top of the The Last Jedi hype train sending updated tracking of its opening day. Instead of aiming for $94 million to $99 million, the studio is aiming for $99 million to $104 million, putting on pace to be only the second film to earn $100 million during its opening day. Furthermore, CinemaScore released their final rating and it was a solid A, exactly what the reviews would suggest. The studio expects the film to make $205 million to $215 million over the weekend, which is close enough to our prediction that I’m happy.

We also got tracking information on the other new release, Ferdinand, which is now technically a Disney release. ... I wonder if they will include their Oscar-winning short film on the DVD / Blu-ray release. This film is struggling and is expected to earn around $4 million tonight and about $14 million overall. This isn’t much better than The Road Trip managed against The Force Awakens back in 2015. On a positive side, the film earned an A from CinemaScore and the holidays should help its legs for the next few weeks.

We also have numbers for Coco. The film will earn about $2.1 million on Friday and $9 million over the weekend. This is a slightly sharper drop than anticipated, but not a collapse and with the competition, it could have collapsed. I still think it will top $200 million domestically.
