Star Wars: The Last Jedi

We’ve been tracking Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s international numbers on a daily basis, since it debuted, so talking about the weekend numbers would actually be behind our most recent report. Just a quick recap: The film earned $68.0 million in 54 markets for totals of $523.3 million internationally and $1.040 billion worldwide. The film is on pace for $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion worldwide, including China, where it opens on Friday.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle remained in second place with $62.09 million on 13,024 screens in 70 markets for totals of $157.32 million internationally and $326.32 million worldwide. The film’s best new market was Australia, where it earned $7.13 million on 329 screens, which was more than enough for first place. It had to settle for second place in India, but with a still impressive $3.23 million on 1,157. The film’s best holdover was the U.K., where it has pulled in $23.92 million, including $7.04 million on 678 screens this past weekend.

Ex Files 3: Return of the Exes opened in third place internationally and first place in its native China with $43.3 million over the weekend for a total opening of $45.4 million.

Next up is Goldbuster with $38.6 million over the weekend for a total opening of $38.7 million.

Youth remained in the top five, maybe, with $28.6 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $182.79 million. It has become so commonplace for local films to earn more than $100 million in China that it is hardly noteworthy. That said, this is still an impressive run so far and it is not over yet.

I said maybe Youth was in fifth place, because The Greatest Showman earned $28.5 million over the weekend for a total haul of $35.2 million. These films are too close to definitely say one finished ahead of the other, as international numbers come with the added margin of error from currency conversions. The film had a pair of third place openings in the U.K. ($6.43 million in 606 theaters) and in Australia ($3.30 million on 287 screens over the weekend and $5.32 million including previews).
